Freshwater rivers are considered the major route for microplastics (MPs), yet limited studies have been reported on MPs in freshwater river fish, especially in Bangladesh. This research reveals the intake of MPs by the giant river catfish Sperata seenghala, collected from the Meghna River, which is the only outlet of the Ganges-Brahmaputra River. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy method for measuring small microplastic (SMP) concentration in marine environment is time-consuming and labor-intensive due to sample pre-treatment. In contrast, Raman spectroscopy is less influenced by water and can directly measure SMP samples in water, making it a more efficient method to measure SMP concentration. Therefore, a method that can directly estimate the concentration of SMPs in water was developed, and the relationship between SMP concentration and experimental Raman spectra were established by testing with standard polyethylene (PE) samples.

We identified a novel immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy chain-like gene (tsIgH) expressed in the liver of the banded houndshark by preliminary transcriptomic analysis. In freshwater systems, contributions of chemosynthetic products by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in sediments as nutritional resources in benthic food webs remain unclear, even though chemosynthetic products might be an important nutritional resource for benthic food webs in deep-sea hydrothermal vents and shallow marine systems. To study geochemical aspects of this trophic pathway, we sampled sediment cores and benthic animals at two sites (90 and 50 m water depths) in the largest freshwater (mesotrophic) lake in Japan: Lake Biwa. Stable carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur isotopes of the sediments and animals were measured to elucidate the sulfur nutritional resources for the benthic food web precisely by calculating the contributions of the incorporation of sulfide-derived sulfur to the biomass and of the biogeochemical sulfur cycle supporting the sulfur nutritional resource.

In this study, an automated identification workflow for Raman micro-imaging (RMI) was developed, and the performance was evaluated by artificial samples of microplastic (MP) microsphere with different sizes and types. Theoretical detection rate and estimated particle size were derived and compared with experimental data. The waters off Sanriku (located on the northeastern coast of Honshu Island, Japan) provide the southernmost habitats of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) during winter and spring in the western North Pacific. In addition to the Warburg effect, which increases the availability of energy and biosynthetic building blocks in WSSV-infected shrimp, WSSV also induces both lipolysis at the viral genome replication stage (12 hpi) to provide material and energy for the virus replication, and lipogenesis at the viral late stage (24 hpi) to complete virus morphogenesis by supplying particular species of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs). Here, we further show that WSSV causes a reduction in lipid droplets (LDs) in hemocytes at the viral genome replication stage, and an increase in LDs in the nuclei of WSSV-infected hemocytes at the viral late stage. In the hepatopancreas, lipolysis is triggered by WSSV infection, and this leads to fatty acids being released into the hemolymph.
