Rice bran is a valuable byproduct from the food processing industry, which contains abundant protein, essential unsaturated fatty acids, and numerous bioactive compounds. However, its susceptibility to rancidity greatly restricts its wide utilization. Many strategies have been proposed to delay the rancidity of rice bran, but most of them have their respective limitations.

Reproduction in fishes is sensitive to temperature. Elevated temperatures and anomalous 'heat waves' associated with climate change have the potential to impact fish reproductive performance and, in some cases, even induce sex reversals. Here we examine how thermal sensitivity in the hormone pathways regulating reproduction provides a framework for understanding impacts of warmer conditions on fish reproduction.

Following the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station, radiocaesium concentrations were specifically elevated in rockfish species compared to other fish species. To clarify the likely reasons, a caesium metabolic rate in the Japanese rockfish Sebastes cheni was derived by an aquarium experiment of live fish collected from the area off Fukushima. Stable caesium and Cs concentration in prey organisms, stomach contents and muscle of rockfish were measured and the bioavailable fraction in prey organisms was evaluated.

Hadal sediments are hotspots of microbial activity in the deep sea and exhibit strong biogeochemical gradients. But although these gradients are widely assumed to exert selective forces on hadal microbial communities, the actual relationship between biogeochemistry, functional traits, and microbial community structure remains poorly understood. We tested whether the biogeochemical conditions in hadal sediments select for microbes based on their genomic capacity for respiration and carbohydrate utilization via a metagenomic analysis of over 153 samples from the Atacama Trench region (max.

In the western North Pacific, prominent granulomatous testes have been detected in many Brucella-infected common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), but there have been no reports in toothed cetaceans. We found severe orchitis with granulomatous lesions in a rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) stranded on the Pacific coast of Japan in 2011. Histopathological examination revealed leukocyte infiltration of the lesions.

Background: Sichuan pepper [Zanthoxylum bungeanum; huājiāo (HJ)] is a widely used spice in China and has better antioxidative, anti-glycation, and bile acid-lowering properties than cumin and coriander seeds. HJ affects inflammation-related cytokines and caecal microbiota in mice fed a low-fibre and high-sucrose diet.
Methods And Results: To determine the ameliorative effect of HJ on inflammatory bowel disease, C57BL/6 mice were divided into three groups and fed distilled water (control) or 3% (w/v) dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) in drinking water with normal chow containing 0% or 5% (w/w) HJ powder for seven days.

In addition to an oral jaw, cichlids have a pharyngeal jaw, which is used for crushing and processing captured prey. The teeth and morphology of the pharyngeal jaw bones adapt to changes in prey in response to changes in the growing environment. This study aimed to explore the possible involvement of the peripheral nervous system in remodeling the cichlid pharyngeal jaw by examining the innervation of the inferior pharyngeal jaw in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus.

Self-organized spatial patterns are increasingly recognized for their contribution to ecosystem functioning. They can improve the ecosystem's ability to respond to perturbation and thus increase its resilience to environmental stress. Plastic pollution has now emerged as major threat to aquatic and terrestrial biota.

The use of Paracoccus carotinifaciens-derived natural astaxanthin as an alternative to synthetic astaxanthin has attracted considerable attention from the aquaculture industry. Furthermore, to enhance the bioavailability of astaxanthin, its "Z-isomerization" has been actively studied in recent years. This study investigated the effects of feeding a diet containing astaxanthin rich in the all-E- or Z-isomers derived from P.

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea of the phylum Thaumarchaeota play a central role in the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen in benthic sediments, at the interface between pelagic and subsurface ecosystems. However, our understanding of their niche separation and of the processes controlling their population structure in hadal and abyssal surface sediments is still limited. Here, we reconstructed 47 AOA metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from surface sediments of the Atacama and Kermadec trench systems.

In this study, an in vitro experiment revealed that the vaccine strain grew between 15 and 30°C in the goldfish cell line RyuF-2. Subsequent in vivo efficacy tests were conducted with vaccination temperatures ranging from 15 to 30°C.

Teleost fish exhibit remarkable sexual plasticity and divergent developmental systems, including sequential hermaphroditism. One of the more fascinating models of sexual plasticity is socially controlled sex change, which is often observed in coral reef fish. The Okinawa rubble goby, is a bi-directional sex-changing fish.

Crustacean genomes harbor sequences originating from a family of large DNA viruses called nimaviruses, but it is unclear why they are present. We show that endogenous nimaviruses selectively insert into repetitive sequences within the host genome, and this insertion specificity was correlated with different types of integrases, which are DNA recombination enzymes encoded by the nimaviruses themselves. This suggests that endogenous nimaviruses have colonized various genomic niches through the acquisition of integrases with different insertion specificities.

In the pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis (Atheriniformes, Atherinopsidae), exposure to high and low temperatures during the critical period of sex determination (CPSD) induce testicular and ovarian differentiation, respectively, regardless of the presence or not of the sex determining gene amhy, which is crucial for testis formation only at intermediate, sexually neutral temperatures. In this study we explored the existence of genotype-specific signaling of Crh (Corticotropin Releasing Hormone) family genes and their associated carrier protein, receptors, and other stress-related genes in response to temperature during the CPSD and the potential involvement of the central nervous system via the hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis in the sex determination of this species. The Crh family genes crhb, uts1, ucn3, the receptor crhr1 and the stress-related genes gr1, gr2, nr3c2 were transiently upregulated in the heads of pejerrey larvae during the CPSD by high temperature alone or in combination with other factors.

We investigated the directional properties and gain control of a pulsed call sequence that functions as a contact call in Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens). The pulsed call sequences were stereotyped patterns composed of three or more pulsed call elements and were collected from two dolphins, separated into adjacent pools, and allowed to swim freely. Eight hydrophones and an overhead camera were used to determine the positions and directions of the participants.

As dark meat has a faster deterioration rate and its unintentional mixing occurs during processing, it is crucial to know the status and freshness indicators of dark meat to ensure fishery product quality. In this method, fluorescence fingerprints (FFs) was applied as a rapid and noninvasive quality authentication method to determine differences between white and dark meat in the evaluation of freshness indicators at frozen state. Spotted mackerel (Scomber australasicus) fish chunks with different postmortem conditions (0-40 h ice stored) were obtained and frozen.

Amino acids exist in two chiral forms, namely L and D. Although l-amino acids are predominant in vivo, certain limited circumstances have reported the usage of d-amino acids. d-aspartate (Asp), among them, plays crucial physiological roles in living organisms and is biosynthesized from L-Asp by the enzyme named aspartate racemase (AspRase).

Carbonyl index (CI) is a measure of the degradation status of microplastics. While many studies address environmental factors of microplastic degradation, intrinsic factors like physical properties, spectral properties, baseline correction, and CI calculation methods are less explored. This research focused on these aspects using surface seawater samples.
