University autonomy is a predictor of English medium instruction in European higher education.

High Educ (Dordr)

November 2024

Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies, School of Languages and Applied Linguistics, The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK.

Despite extensive research into English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in higher education, few if any studies have explored the role of higher education autonomy in driving EMI. This paper tests the novel hypothesis that university autonomy-spearheaded across European higher education through neoliberally predicated 'steering at a distance' reforms-predicts EMI. The data are multilevel with higher education institutions (HEIs) nested inside education systems.

Human dexterity and brains evolved hand in hand.

Commun Biol

August 2025

Division of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Reading, Reading, UK.

Large brains and dexterous hands are considered pivotal in human evolution, together making possible technology, culture and colonisation of diverse environments. Despite suggestions that hands and brains coevolved, evidence remains circumstantial. Here, we reveal a significant relationship between relatively longer thumbs - a key feature of precision grasping - and larger brains across 95 fossil and extant primates using Bayesian phylogenetic methods.

School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystems, Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, The Open University, Walton Hall, Milton Keynes, MK6 6AA UK.

Unlabelled: The nature, location, longevity and pressure-temperature conditions of different crustal melt reactions during orogenesis provide constraints on the structure, mechanical strength and exhumation of orogenic middle crust as well as element mobilisation and crustal differentiation. The Himalayan orogen offers a natural laboratory for studying crustal melting by exposing both migmatites and leucogranites in its structurally highest levels. We combine previous frameworks that link petrography or bulk geochemistry to melt reaction with in-situ trace-element analyses of large-ion lithophile elements in feldspar, mica, and garnet, U-Th-Pb isotopes in monazite and zircon and thermometry calculations in samples from the Badrinath region of the Garhwal Himalaya.

Background: In England, people aged > 60 are typically required to pay for their prescriptions. Whilst exemption criteria enable people living with specified long-term health conditions to receive free prescriptions, Parkinson's disease is omitted from this list. People with Parkinson's are often reliant upon medications, and evidence suggests that medical fees can reduce quality of life and medicine adherence.

Engineering Education Innovation Research Center, The Open University of Sichuan, Chengdu, 610073, China.

Matching vast online resources to individual learners' needs remains a major challenge, especially for adults with diverse backgrounds. To address this challenge, we proposed a Dynamic Knowledge Graph-enhanced Cross-Modal Recommendation model (DKG-CMR) to solve the problem. This model utilizes a dynamic knowledge graph-a structure organizing information and relationships-that continuously updates based on learner actions and course objectives.

The marine phycosphere is a microscale mucosal region of microbiomes surrounding a phytoplankton cell. The phycosphere (analogous to the terrestrial rhizosphere) is where microbial interactions navigate the biochemistry of the sea. The study of this microsphere deals with the causal relation enigma between two spatiotemporal scales: the micro-communal interactions and the macro-level of the biogeochemical cycles (Stocker, Science, 338(6107), 628-633, 2012); Segev et al.

Tripling Fluctuations and Peaked Sound Speed in Fermionic Matter.

Phys Rev Lett

July 2025

The University of Tokyo, Department of Physics, Graduate School of Science, Tokyo 113-0033, Japan.

A crossover involving three-fermion clusters is relevant to the hadron-quark crossover, which, if occurring in a neutron star, could naturally reproduce the dense-matter equation of state recently deduced from simultaneous observations of neutron-star masses and radii. To understand the crossover mechanism, we examine the role of tripling fluctuations induced by the formation of three-fermion clusters. The phase-shift representation of fluctuations manifests an interplay of bound and scattering states, leading to nonmonotonic momentum distributions of baryonlike clusters and peaked sound speed at finite densities.

Clostridia Research Group, BBSRC/EPSRC Synthetic Biology Research Centre (SBRC), Biodiscovery Institute, School of Life Sciences, The University of Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom; NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Nott

Two-component system signalling is involved in several processes relevant to Clostridioides difficile virulence. We demonstrate that deletion of the orphan histidine kinase rgaS (R20291_0503), reduces detectable toxin in the supernatant of R20291 and impairs virulence in a mouse model of infection. These data suggest that RgaS regulates virulence capabilities in hypervirulent C.

Background: Sri Lanka has been malaria-free since 2012, yet the risk of malaria re-introduction is high during the post-malaria elimination phase due to influx of infected individuals from endemic countries, the presence of competent Anopheles vectors, and suitable climatic conditions for vectors across Sri Lanka. This may lead to the re-emergence of autochthonous malaria in areas beyond the historically affected dry and intermediate zones. To sustain the malaria-free status, a better understanding of Anopheles species across Sri Lanka's climatic zones is essential.
