Numerical Study on Effect of Contact and Interfacial Resistance on Thermal Conductivity of Dispersed Composites.

Materials (Basel)

January 2023

Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Aichi University of Technology, 50-2 Manori, Gamagori 443-0047, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

A series of finite element analyses were conducted to clarify the effect of contact and interfacial resistance between constituents on effective thermal conductivities of dispersed composites. Equally dispersed fillers in FCC (face-centered cubic) and BCC (body-centered cubic) material systems were extracted from cyclic microstructures as unit cell models. In addition to spherical fillers, a polyhedron called the Wigner-Seitz cell that can realize a fully packed microstructure was chosen as the shape of the filler to investigate the effect of contact between the high volumetric fraction of fillers.

Three cationic dinuclear Au(I) complexes containing acetonitrile (AN) as an ancillary ligand were synthesized: [μ-L(AuAN)]·2BF (1), [μ-L(AuAN)]·2BF (2), and [μ-L(AuAN)]·2BF (3) (L = {1,2-bis[bis(2-methylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, L = {1,2-bis[bis(2-ethylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, and L = {1,2-bis[bis(2-isopropylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}). The unique structures of complexes 1-3 with two P-Au(I)-AN rods bridged by rigid diphosphine ligands were determined through X-ray analysis. The Au(I)-Au(I) distances observed for complexes 1-3 were as short as 2.

Graduate School of Science and Technology, Niigata University, 8050 Ikarashi 2-no-cho, Nishi-ku, Niigata 950-2181, Japan.

Plants recognize the direction of a light source and exhibit phototropic responses. Physiological studies have predicted that differences in the light intensity received by the cells on the irradiated and shaded sides of a coleoptile or hypocotyl cause differences in the amounts of photoproduct. This hypothetical photoproduct appears to regulate a signaling pathway that controls cell elongation in which cells under lower light intensity elongate more than those under higher light intensity.

Under extreme working conditions such as high-speed driving on roads with a large road surface unevenness coefficient, turning on a road with a low road surface adhesion coefficient, and emergency acceleration and braking, a vehicle's stability deteriorates sharply and reduces ride comfort. There is extensive existing research on vehicle active suspension control, trajectory tracking, and control methods. However, most of these studies focus on conventional operating conditions, while vehicle stability analysis under extreme operating conditions is much less studied.

Although research on learning strategies has contributed to improving learners' performance, most studies only described the characteristics of learners. These approaches have focused on inter-individual differences and their correlations, making it difficult to examine the process of selecting learning strategies in individuals. To examine the correlations within individual learners, such as the variables that influence the use of a strategy by a specific learner, two surveys were conducted in this study.

The blue light photoreceptors, phototropin 1 (phot1) and phot2, and their signal transducer, NONPHOTOTROPIC HYPOCOTYL3 (NPH3), are activators of the phototropic responses of hypocotyls. In a recent study, we reported that the control of NPH3 phosphorylation at serine 7 (S7: or S5), S213, S223, S237, S467, S474 (or S476), and S722 (or S723) contributes to the photosensory adaptation of phot1 signaling during the phototropic response. Phosphomimetic NPH3 mutant and unphosphorylatable NPH3 mutant on those serine residues function efficiently under blue light conditions at fluence rates of 10 µmol m s and 10 µmol m s or more, respectively.

Purpose: The performance of deep learning may fluctuate depending on the imaging devices and settings. Although domain transformation such as CycleGAN for normalizing images is useful, CycleGAN does not use information on the disease classes. Therefore, we propose a semi-supervised CycleGAN with an additional classification loss to transform images suitable for the diagnosis.

October 2021

Graduate School of Science and Technology, Niigata University, 8050 Ikarashi 2-no-cho, Nishi-ku, Niigata 950-2181, Japan.

Photosensory adaptation, which can be classified as sensor or effector adaptation, optimizes the light sensing of living organisms by tuning their sensitivity to changing light conditions. During the phototropic response in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), the light-dependent expression controls of blue-light (BL) photoreceptor phototropin 1 (phot1) and its modulator ROOT PHOTOTROPISM2 (RPT2) are known as the molecular mechanisms underlying sensor adaptation. However, little is known about effector adaption in plant phototropism.

Department of Information Technology and Media Design, Nippon Institute of Technology, Miyashiro-machi, Saitama 345-0826, Japan.

Many accidents are caused by sudden changes in the physical conditions of professional drivers. Therefore, it is quite important that the driver monitoring system must not restrict or interfere with the driver's action. Applications that can measure a driver's heartbeat without restricting the driver's action are currently under development.

College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Key Laboratory of Molecular and Nano Probes, Ministry of Education, Collaborative Innovation Center of Functionalized Probes for Chemical Imaging in Universities of Shandong, Shandong Normal University, Jinan 250014, P.R. China.

Water-stable gold nanoparticle vesicles (GNVs) with hollow interiors have attracted attention due to their great potential for biological applications; however, their preparation through the self-assembly approaches has been restricted due to the limited understanding of their critical mechanistic issues. In this paper, we demonstrate that a fluorinated tetra (ethylene glycol) (FTEG)-terminated tetra (ethylene glycol) (EG4), namely, FTEG-EG4, ligand can self-assemble with gold nanoparticles (5 and 10 nm) into GNVs with a hollow structure in THF due to the solvophobic feature of the ligand. Time-dependent studies showed that the GNVs with a closely packed surface derived from the incomplete and irregular GNVs, but not through the fusion of the GNV precursors.

Nanoplastics have spread widely throughout not only the oceans but also the atmosphere, and recently created great concern about human health relevant to ingestion and accumulation of the nanoparticles by aquatic organisms in the human food-chain. However, how the nanoplastics have an affect on actual human body remains largely unknown, and in particular, little knowledge about nanoplastic exposure to the nervous system in human has been obtained in vitro and still less vivo. Here, we evaluated how much concentration of nanoplastics had a direct impact on cells in the nervous system as the fundamental information.

Sodium Alginate Ultrasound Phantom for Medical Education.

Ultrason Imaging

September 2021

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Nippon Institute of Technology, Miyashiro, Saitama, Japan.

The ultrasound phantoms used to educate medical students should not only closely mimic the ultrasound characteristics of human soft tissues but also be inexpensive and easy to manufacture. I have been studying handmade ultrasound phantoms and proposed an ultrasound phantom comprising calcium alginate hydrogel that met these requirements but caused a speckle pattern similar to that observed in ultrasound images of liver. In this study, I show that adding ethanol to the precursors used to fabricate the phantom reduces the speckle pattern.

Fiber reinforced thermoplastics (FRTP), reinforced with glass or carbon fibers, are used to improve the mechanical strength of injection-molded products. However, FRTP has problems such as the formation of weld lines, the deterioration of appearance due to the exposure of fibers on the molded product surface, and the deterioration of the strength of molded products due to the fiber orientation in the molded products. We have designed and fabricated an injection mold capable of melt flow control and induction heating and cooling.

Tropomyosin (Tpm) is a two-stranded parallel α-helical coiled-coil protein, and studying its structure is crucial for understanding the nature of coiled coils. Previously, we found that the N-terminal half of the human skeletal muscle α-Tpm (α-Tpm 140) was less structurally stable in the presence of phosphate ions than the coiled-coil protein carrier (CCPC) 140 variant with 18 mutated residues, in which all amino acid residues located at the interface between the two α-helices were completely conserved. A classical hypothesis explains that interhelical interactions stabilize the coiled-coil structure.

An extrusion-type fine blanking with a negative clearance was proposed by the authors instead of standard fine blanking for creating a full-sheared surface in the micro blanking process. In this study, micro blanking experiments and finite element analyses with narrow, zero and negative clearances are carried out for the optimizing the clearance at which a shear cut surface can be finished with a full-sheared surface with the minimized punch load. Fracture criterion, hydrostatic stress and maximum punch stress for the conditions with various clearances are investigated.
