Cucumber farmers classify harvested cucumbers based on specific criteria before they are introduced to the market. During peak harvesting periods, farmers must process a large volume of cucumbers; however, the classification task requires specialized knowledge and experience. This expertise-dependent process poses a significant challenge, as it prevents untrained individuals, including hired workers, from effectively assisting in classification, thereby necessitating that farmers perform the task themselves.

Organisms adapt to predictable environmental changes via a biological mechanism called priming. Phototropin is a plant-specific blue light photoreceptor that mediates daily light-induced responses, such as chloroplast relocation, stomatal opening, and phototropism, to optimize photosynthesis. Phototropin also functions as a thermosensor for chloroplast relocation that may sense daily temperature decreases at night, thereby modulating light-induced responses at dawn; however, this hypothesis has not yet been fully explored.

Coiled-coil protein carrier (CCPC) 140 is a rigid and anisotropically structured cationic coiled-coil artificial protein that has displayed up to a 1000 times higher level of cellular internalization activity than that of unstructured cell-penetrating peptides. Previous studies have demonstrated that CCPC 140's rigid and anisotropic structural properties and cationic surface properties are important for its superior cellular internalization activity. In this study, we investigated whether each physicochemical characteristic of CCPC 140 effectively contributed to activating the cellular internalization pathway.

Plasma nitriding is one of the surface modifications that show more effectiveness than other methods. In this study, the plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) technique was performed on the surface of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V, Ti64) using a mixture of nitrogen (N) and argon (Ar), resulting in a plasma-nitrided surface (TiN-Ti64). The surface composition of the TiN-Ti64 was verified through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are promising light-emitting devices. A typical method for generating white light is to superimpose the three primary colours of light - red, green, and blue - or the two colours of light - blue and yellow. These colours are generated from each emitting material doped into the emission layers of the device.

Plants exhibit shoot growth in the direction of the light source to facilitate photosynthesis, known as positive phototropism. In Arabidopsis hypocotyl phototropism, it is thought that a gradient of the signal intensity of the blue light (BL) photoreceptor phototropin1 (phot1) between the light-irradiated and shaded sides leads to the differential growth of hypocotyls. The intensity of phot1 signal is regulated not only by the protein kinase activity of phot1 but also by the phosphorylation status of the NONPHOTOTROPIC HYPOCOTYL3 (NPH3) protein, which has a dark form and a BL form of the phosphorylation modification.

Pear pollination is performed by artificial pollination because the pollination rate through insect pollination is not stable. Pollen must be collected to secure sufficient pollen for artificial pollination. However, recently, collecting sufficient amounts of pollen in Japan has become difficult, resulting in increased imports from overseas.

We propose a heuristic method of using network centralities for constructing small-weight Steiner trees in this paper. The Steiner tree problem in graphs is one of the practical NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. Given a graph and a set of vertices called terminals in the graph, the objective of the Steiner tree problem in graphs is to find a minimum weight Steiner tree that is a tree containing all the terminals.

Gold nanoparticles functionalized with 18-crown 6-ether (18C6-AuNPs) can be used for detection of tannic acid, epigallocatechin gallate, and epicatechin gallate by color change in the μg mL range. 18C6-AuNPs were insensitive to l-ascorbic acid and l-tyrosine unlike conventional detection methods, such as Folin & Ciocalteu assay, whose principle is based on the redox reaction of polyphenols. Although 18C6-AuNPs did not respond to some polyphenols, such as gallic acid and epicatechin, if the polyphenols of interest are responsive to this approach, these are expected to be effective nanomaterial for simple sensing of polyphenols.

In laser beam processing, the angle or offset between the auxiliary gas and the laser beam axis have been proved to be two new process optimization parameters for improving cutting speed and quality. However, a traditional electromechanical actuator cannot achieve high-speed and high-precision motion control with a compact structure. This paper proposes a magnetic levitation actuator which could realize the 5-DOF motion control of a lens using six groups of differential electromagnets.

Trans-cis photoisomerization is generally described by a model in which the reaction proceeds via a common intermediate having a perpendicular conformation around the rotating bond, irrespective of from which isomer the reaction starts. Nevertheless, such an intermediate has yet to be identified unambiguously, and it is often called the 'phantom' state. Here we present the structural identification of the common, perpendicular intermediate of stilbene photoisomerization using ultrafast Raman spectroscopy.

In vivo, articular cartilage tissue is surrounded by a cartilage membrane, and hydrostatic pressure (HP) and compressive strain increase simultaneously with the compressive stress. However, it has been impossible to investigate the effects of simultaneous loading in vitro. In this study, a bioreactor capable of applying compressive stress under HP was developed to reproduce ex vivo the same physical loading environment found in cartilage.

This research aims to fabricate plane-type substrates for evaluating the axon behaviors of neuronal cells in vitro toward the development of brain-on-chip models by applying the functions of diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film deposition, which helped to eliminate the costly and time-consuming lithography process by utilizing a shadow mask. The DLC thin films were partially deposited on stretched polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates covered with a metal mask by the plasma chemical vaper deposition method, and using the substrates culture teats with human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) were performed. Three patterns of interconnection structures of axons were created on the substrates with disordered and regular linear wrinkle structures with several μm size formed by the depositions.

Finding the shortest paths for packets from sources to destinations in packet-switched communication networks is an inevitable problem in building a future high-speed information society. A routing method with memory information has already been proposed to alleviate the congestion of large volumes of packet flow. This routing method shows a high transmission completion rate even for large volumes of packet flows in communication networks with scale-free properties.

Quartz-crystal-microbalance (QCM) biosensor is a typical label-free biosensor, and its sensitivity can be greatly improved by removing electrodes and wires that would be otherwise attached to the surfaces of the quartz resonator. The wireless-electrodeless QCM biosensor was then developed using a microelectro-mechanical systems (MEMS) process, although challenges remain in the sensitivity, the coupling efficiency, and the miniaturization (or mass production). In this study, we establish a MEMS process to obtain a large number of identical ultrasensitive and highly efficient sensor chips with dimensions of 6 mm square.

Fluoroalkyl sulfoximines, which serve as electron-accepting fluoroalkyl radical sources, are easy-to-handle, solid, and bench-stable chemicals. Fluoroalkyl radicals can be generated from sulfoximine reagents using strong one-electron injectors, such as a highly reducing photoredox catalyst in the excited state. Our group has developed photocatalytic radical di- and mono-fluoromethylation and α-monofluoroalkylation of olefins with the corresponding fluoroalkyl sulfoximines.
