Photonic crystals with mechanochromic properties are currently under intensive study to provide intuitive colorimetric detection of strains for various applications. However, the sensitivity of color change to strain is intrinsically limited, as the degree of deformation determines the wavelength shift. To overcome this limitation, auxetic photonic patterns that exhibit ultra-sensitive mechanochromism are designed.

Owing to the limited electrochemical stability window of carbonate electrolytes, the initial formation of a solid electrolyte interphase and surface film on the negative and positive electrode surfaces by the decomposition of the electrolyte component is inevitable for the operation of lithium secondary batteries. The deposited film on the surface of the active material is vital for reducing further electrochemical side reactions at the surface; hence, the manipulation of this formation process is necessary for the appropriate operation of the assembled battery system. In this study, the thermal decomposition of LiPF salt is used as a surface passivation agent, which is autocatalytically formed during high-temperature storage.

Aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) are emerging energy storage systems that are poised to replace conventional lithium-ion batteries owing to their intrinsic safety, facile manufacturing process, economic benefits, and superior ionic conductivity. However, the issues of inferior anode reversibility and dendritic plating during operation remain challenging for the practical use of AZMBs. Herein, a gel electrolyte based on zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (poly(SBMA)) dissolved with different concentrations of ZnSO is proposed.

Plastic waste is a pernicious environmental pollutant that threatens ecosystems and human health by releasing contaminants including di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and bisphenol A (BPA). Therefore, a machine-learning (ML)-powered electrochemical aptasensor was developed in this study for simultaneously detecting DEHP and BPA in river waters, particularly to minimize the electrochemical signal errors caused by varying pH levels. The aptasensor leverages a straightforward and effective surface modification strategy featuring gold nanoflowers to achieve low detection limits for DEHP and BPA (0.

The increased prevalence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the integration of digital technology into our daily lives have given rise to heightened security risks and the need for more robust security measures. In response to these challenges, physical unclonable functions (PUFs) have emerged as promising solution, offering a highly secure method to generate unpredictable and unique random digital values by leveraging inherent physical characteristics. However, traditional PUFs implementations often require complex hardware and circuitry, which can add to the cost and complexity of the system.

For realizing all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), it is highly desirable to develop a robust solid electrolyte (SE) that has exceptional ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability at room temperature. While argyrodite-type LiPSCl (LPSCl) SE has garnered attention for its relatively high ionic conductivity (∼3.19 × 10 S cm), it tends to emit hydrogen sulfide (HS) in the presence of moisture, which can hinder the performance of ASSBs.

A facile method for synthesizing carbon-coated lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO, LFP) and an LFP-based multidimensional nanocarbon composite to enhance the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries is presented herein. Three types of cathode materials are prepared: carbon-coated LFP (LC), carbon-coated LFP with carbon nanotubes (LC@C), and carbon-coated LFP with carbon nanotubes/graphene quantum dots (LC@CG). The electrochemical performances of the LC-nanocarbon composites are compared, and both LC@C and LC@CG show improved electrochemical performance than LC.

This paper investigates the performance of deep convolutional spiking neural networks (DCSNNs) trained using spike-based backpropagation techniques. Specifically, the study examined temporal spike sequence learning via backpropagation (TSSL-BP) and surrogate gradient descent via backpropagation (SGD-BP) as effective techniques for training DCSNNs on the field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform for object classification tasks. The primary objective of this experimental study was twofold: (i) to determine the most effective backpropagation technique, TSSL-BP or SGD-BP, for deeper spiking neural networks (SNNs) with convolution filters across various datasets; and (ii) to assess the feasibility of deploying DCSNNs trained using backpropagation techniques on low-power FPGA for inference, considering potential configuration adjustments and power requirements.

This study proposes the possibility of employing metal iodates as novel gas-sensing materials synthesized using a facile chemical precipitation method. An extensive survey of a library of metal iodates reveals that cobalt, nickel, and copper iodates are useful for gas sensor applications. Material analysis conducted using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermal gravity differential temperature analysis, and Raman spectroscopy enables us to understand the thermal behavior and optimize post-annealing conditions.

Metalizing three-dimensional (3D)-printed polymers has been spotlighted in the field of manufacturing high-end and customized electrical components. Conventional metalization approaches that rely on the electroless plating (ELP) process typically require the use of noble metal-based catalysts or involve multistep processes, limiting their practical applications. Herein, we propose a straightforward yet effective approach to manufacture 3D-printed polymers with conductive metal layers through a thiol-mediated ELP process without involving an additional catalytic activation process.

Hiding terrestrial objects from aerial monitoring has long been an important objective in national security and public safety. However, the diversity of terrestrial environments raises great challenges to traditional camouflages optimized for a single spectral band or single type of background environment, rendering them vulnerable in other bands or backgrounds. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate simultaneous visual and thermal camouflage that can adapt to two different environments based on a thermally emissive electrochromic layer.

In this study, a subminiature implantable capacitive pressure sensor is proposed for biomedical applications. The proposed pressure sensor comprises an array of elastic silicon nitride (SiN) diaphragms formed by the application of a polysilicon (p-Si) sacrificial layer. In addition, using the p-Si layer, a resistive temperature sensor is also integrated into one device without additional fabrication steps or extra cost, thus enabling the device to measure pressure and temperature simultaneously.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) thin film/molybdenum (Mo) electrode structures are typically required in microelectromechanical system applications. However, the growth of highly crystalline and -axis-oriented AlN thin films on Mo electrodes remains challenging. In this study, we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of AlN thin films on Mo electrode/sapphire (0001) substrates and examine the structural characteristics of Mo thin films to determine the reason contributing to the epitaxial growth of AlN thin films on Mo thin films formed on sapphire.

Active photocatalysts with an efficiency of 99% were prepared for the degradation of the industrial dye, methylene blue (MB), under visible light irradiation. These photocatalysts comprised Co/Ni-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), to which bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) was added as a filler to prepare Co/Ni-MOF@BiOI composites. The composites exhibited remarkable photocatalytic degradation of MB in aqueous solutions.

Owing to the rise in global population and living standards, waste treatment has inevitably become a critical issue for a sustainable environment. In particular, for an effective recycling process, it is vital to disassemble different types of materials by removing adhesives used in the packaging. However, this removal process requires harsh solvents (acidic and organic) that are unfriendly to nature and may cause additional pollution.

The uncontrollable dendritic growth of metallic lithium during repeated cycling in carbonate electrolytes is a crucial obstacle hindering the practical use of Li-metal batteries (LMBs). Among numerous approaches proposed to mitigate the intrinsic constraints of Li metal, the design of a functional separator is an attractive approach to effectively suppress the growth of Li dendrites because direct contact with both the Li metal surface and the electrolyte is maintained. Here, a newly designed all-in-one separator containing bifunctional CaCO nanoparticles (CPP separator) is proposed to achieve the flattening of Li deposits on the Li electrode.
