The interplay between subcellular adhesion dynamics and cellular-scale deformations under shear flow drives key physiological and pathological processes. While both bond kinetics and fluid-cell interactions have been extensively studied in rolling adhesion, how bond characteristics quantitatively determine cellular velocity distributions remains unclear. In this study, we systematically investigate how force-free bond kinetics and intrinsic mechanical properties govern rolling adhesion dynamics, using macroscopic velocity distributions as a reference.

Many enteric bacterial pathogens deliver virulence effectors to counteract host innate immune responses, such as inflammation and cell death, and colonize the intestinal epithelium. However, host cells recognize the disruption of their innate immune signaling by bacterial effectors and induce alternative immune responses, collectively termed "effector-triggered immunity", to clear bacterial pathogens. Here, we describe a mechanism of cell death induction via effector-triggered immunity and the bacterial countermeasures of the pathogen Shigella flexneri.

Carbonaceous asteroids are the source of the most primitive meteorites and represent leftover planetesimals that formed from ice and dust in the outer Solar System and may have delivered volatiles to the terrestrial planets. Understanding the aqueous activity of asteroids is key to deciphering their thermal, chemical and orbital evolution, with implications for the origin of water on the terrestrial planets. Analyses of the objects, in particular pristine samples returned from asteroid Ryugu, have provided detailed information on fluid-rock interactions within a few million years after parent-body formation.

Hopfions-higher-dimensional topological quasiparticles with sophisticated 3D knotted spin textures discovered in condensed matter and photonic systems-show promise in high-density data storage and transfer. Here, we present crystalline structures of hopfions lying in space-time constructed by spatiotemporally structured light. Practical methodologies using bichromatic structured light beams or dipole arrays to assemble 1D and higher dimensional hopfion lattices are proposed, and a technique for tailoring topological orders is elucidated.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFEnterocolitis is a common gastrointestinal manifestation of immune-related adverse events (irAEs); however, only a few studies have reported on irAE enteritis with localized active inflammation in the small intestine. Here, we report the case of a 74-year-old man who developed diarrhea, abdominal pain, and oral intake difficulty and was subsequently hospitalized after receiving atezolizumab for pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Computed tomography and enterocolonoscopy revealed active inflammation in the small intestine but not in the colon, leading to the final diagnosis of irAE enteritis.

Context: Newborn screening (NBS) for 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21OHD) has historically shown high false positive (FP) rates, especially in low birth weight (LBW) infants. In 2022, we proposed a second-tier liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-based algorithm to improve screening specificity; however, its real-world performance remains unassessed prospectively.
Objective: To prospectively evaluate our LC-MS/MS-based screening algorithm for 21OHD and develop a refined version addressing newly identified clinical limitations.

Herein, we report the concept, design and optimization of a microfluidic device based on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection that can be potentially operated without electricity for analytical purposes. The device functions exploiting the concept of streaming potential-driven bipolar electrochemistry, where a potential difference, generated from the flow of an electrolyte through a microchannel under the influence of a pressure gradient, is the driving force for redox reactions.

Background & Aims: Previous studies showed that combination treatment with short interfering RNA JNJ-73763989 (JNJ-3989) ± capsid assembly modulator bersacapavir (JNJ-56136379) and nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) was well tolerated by patients with chronic HBV (CHB), with JNJ-3989 dose-dependent reductions in viral markers, including HBsAg. The open-label, single-arm phase IIa PENGUIN study (NCT04667104) evaluated this regimen plus pegylated interferon alpha-2a (PegIFN-α2a) in patients with virologically suppressed CHB.
Methods: Patients who were either HBeAg-positive or -negative virologically suppressed and taking NAs were included; all received JNJ-3989 ± bersacapavir for 24 weeks (some either did not start or discontinued bersacapavir as a result of protocol amendment) with PegIFN-α2a added during the final 12 weeks of treatment.

Many decellularized tissues in clinical applications are prepared using surfactants; however, we have developed a new decellularization method that uses subcritical dimethyl ether (DME) instead of surfactants. Subcritical DME perfusion is usually used for lipid extraction; therefore, by perfusing tissues with subcritical DME, phospholipid cell membranes may be destroyed.

Thoracic duct embolization has emerged as an alternative treatment for refractory chylothorax, in addition to thoracic duct ligation. Thoracic duct embolization is typically performed via direct puncture of the cisterna chyli and cannulation of the thoracic duct, or via a retrograde approach to the thoracic duct through the venous angle. The former requires a long puncture through abdominal organs; the latter has anatomical limitations depending on the case.
