ObjectiveVascular closure devices (VCDs) are essential in modern neuro-interventional procedures, offering advantages over manual compression by accelerating hemostasis, reducing complications, and enabling early ambulation. The Obtura 8F VCD is a novel bioabsorbable closure device designed to enhance safety and procedural efficiency. This study evaluates its efficacy and safety in achieving hemostasis and preventing vascular complications following femoral artery access.

Background: Drug-induced QTc prolongation is a significant concern in critically ill patients, increasing the risk of life-threatening arrhythmias. This prospective observational study evaluates the association between QTc prolongation, serum potassium and magnesium levels, and clinical outcomes in adult medical intensive care unit (ICU) patients.

Methodology: The study included 116 adult ICU patients prescribed QTc-prolonging drugs, excluding those with atrial fibrillation, pacemakers, or early transfers.

BackgroundMechanical thrombectomy (MT) is the gold standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with large vessel occlusion. Direct cervical carotid puncture is a recognized approach in unfavorable aortic arch anatomy. However, manual compression/ surgical closure of the access site can be challenging if the International Normalized Ratio (INR) is high and the patient is taking anticoagulation.

July 2024

CARIM School for Cardiovascular Diseases, Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the prevalence of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) in Indian adults using 24-hour Holter monitoring.
  • Among 23,847 patients analyzed, 17.4% were diagnosed with AF, with an average episode lasting about 14 minutes.
  • The findings suggest that AF is common yet often untreated, and its brief episodes may lead to underdiagnosis in clinical settings.

Anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is a reversible cause of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in infants. The LV function is expected to improve serially and return to normal by 1 year after surgical repair. The pattern of improvement in LV function has not been serially analyzed after ALCAPA repair.

Atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) with shunting restricted to the ventricular level is a rare form of AVSD. To our knowledge, this shunting pattern has not been reported in AVSD with tetralogy of Fallot. We report a child with this unusual combination who underwent a successful single-stage repair at two years of age.

American College of Cardiology (ACC), American Heart Association (AHA) and Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) recently released the Clinical Practice Guidelines for myocardial revascularization [1]. The guidelines were the felt need of the fraternity and this single all-encompassing document, relegating the previous six guidelines on the subject to archives, is indeed welcome. However, the downgrading of coronary artery bypass surgery for stable multivessel coronary artery disease and its bracketing with percutaneous coronary interventions has caused a lot of anguish in the surgical fraternity.

Separate guidelines, applicable to Indian children, are required when recommending an intervention for congenital heart diseases, as often these patients present late in the course of the disease and may have co-existing morbidities and malnutrition.
