Utilizing Naloxone Education to Reduce the Mortality and Morbidity Rate of Overdose Deaths Within Opioid-Exposed Populations.

While efforts are being made to reduce opioid overdose fatalities, there is a need to equip individuals to act in overdose emergencies in an effort to slow the increasing rates of preventable opioid-related deaths in the United States. This study sought to determine whether education on naloxone administration would increase confidence in individuals utilizing harm reduction services to intervene in the presence of an opioid overdose.  Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted that included adult participants attending Challenges, Inc.

Overdoses Involving Medetomidine Mixed with Opioids - Chicago, Illinois, May 2024.

Medetomidine, a nonopioid sedative not approved for use in humans, has periodically been detected in illegally manufactured opioids across North America since 2022. On May 11, 2024, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Illinois Department of Public Health were alerted by hospitals and the Illinois Poison Center to an increase in emergency medical services responses for suspected opioid-involved overdoses with atypical symptoms, mostly clustered on Chicago's West Side. CDPH and CDC investigated and identified 12 confirmed, 26 probable, and 140 suspected overdoses involving medetomidine mixed with opioids among patients treated at three hospitals in Chicago's West Side during May 11-17, 2024.

Firearm Fatalities in the Pediatric Population: A Retrospective Study From the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Gunshot injuries are one of the leading causes of death from trauma in the United States. In recent years, the US has experienced an increasing number of fatal pediatric cases related to firearms.A search of the database of the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office over the period January 2016-December 2021 revealed 418 deaths by gunshot wounds (GSWs) among people aged between 0 and 18 years old.

MDMB-4en-PINACA-Related Deaths in Cook County Jail: Awareness and Preventive Measures.

Since January 2023, a series of fatalities has occurred in the Cook County Jail. Upon reviewing surveillance videos, in some cases, the inmates shared paper strips, and it was followed by the onset of labored breathing and loss of consciousness. Scene investigation revealed burnt paper strips near the body in 3 cases.

Background: Peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL), not otherwise specified (NOS) is a heterogenous group of predominantly nodal T cell lymphomas that generally presents with lymphadenopathy with or without extra nodal involvement. Acral vascular syndrome clinically presents as digital ischemia with Raynaud's phenomenon and acral cyanosis. Although, this condition is commonly associated with connective tissue disorder, smoking and vasculitis, its association with lymphoid malignancy is very rare.
