Background: Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) used to prevent sudden cardiac arrest in children not only provide appropriate therapy in 25% of patients but also result in a significant incidence of inappropriate shocks and other device complications. ICDs placed for secondary prevention have higher rates of appropriate therapy than those placed for primary prevention. Pediatric patients with primary prevention ICDs were studied to determine time-dependent incidence of appropriate use and adverse events.

Heterosis is important for agriculture; however, little is known about the mechanisms driving hybrid vigor. Ultimately, heterosis depends on the interactions of specific alleles and epialleles provided by the parents, which is why hybrids can exhibit different levels of heterosis, even within the same species. We characterize the development of several intraspecific Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) F1 hybrids that show different levels of heterosis at maturity.

Thermodynamics of a subensemble of a canonical ensemble.

Phys Rev E Stat Nonlin Soft Matter Phys

May 2009

Department of Chemistry, Technische Universität München, D-85747 Garching, Germany.

Two approaches to describing the thermodynamics of a subsystem that interacts with a thermal bath are considered. Within the first approach, the mean system energy E_{S} is identified with the expectation value of the system Hamiltonian, which is evaluated with respect to the overall (system+bath) equilibrium distribution. Within the second approach, the system partition function Z_{S} is considered as the fundamental quantity, which is postulated to be the ratio of the overall (system+bath) and the bath partition functions, and the standard thermodynamic relation E_{S}=-d(ln Z_{S})/dbeta is used to obtain the mean system energy.

In Thailand, 51% (36/70) Campylobacter jejuni isolates from humans and 68% (47/69) isolates from poultry were classified into 10 Penner serotypes (serotype B, C, R, E, G, A, K, D, I, and L) and 9 serotypes (serotype A, C, I, K, B, E, S, D, and L), respectively. The rate of antimicrobial drug resistance to nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin, tetracycline, and erythromycin shown by human isolates were 96%, 96%, 29%, 57%, and 14%, while that shown by poultry isolates were 77%, 77%, 22%, 26%, and 17%, respectively. All quinolone-resistant strains contained a mutation in the gyrA gene (T(86)-->I(86)), suggesting that the strains were already widespread in Thailand.

The synapse-associated protein-97 (SAP97) is important in the proper trafficking and cell surface maintenance of the N-methyl-D-aspartate ionotropic glutamate receptor. The molecular scaffold/receptor interaction is mediated by the association of the C terminus of the NR2B subunit of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor with the PDZ domains of SAP97. Here, we characterize the binding of the C terminus of NR2B with the PDZ domains of SAP97 and determine the structure of the PDZ1-NR2B complex employing high-resolution NMR.

X-ray-induced debromination of nucleic acids at the Br K absorption edge and implications for MAD phasing.

Acta Crystallogr D Biol Crystallogr

August 2002

UPR 9002 du CNRS, IBMC, 15 Rue R. Descartes, 67084 Strasbourg CEDEX, France.

Multi-wavelength anomalous dispersion (MAD) using brominated derivatives is considered a common and convenient technique for solving chemically synthesized nucleic acid structures. Here, it is shown that a relatively moderate X-ray dose (of the order of 5 x 10(15) photons mm(-2)) can induce sufficient debromination to prevent structure determination. The decrease in bromine occupancy with radiation dose can be accounted for by a simple exponential, with an estimated rate constant at the absorption-peak wavelength, 7.

We report linear free energy relation (LFER) models of the equilibrium distribution of molecules between blood and brain, as log BB values. This method relates log BB values to fundamental molecular properties, such as hydrogen bonding capability, polarity/polarisability and size. Our best model of this form covers 148 compounds, the largest set of log BB data yet used in such a model, resulting in R(2)=0.

A new software package for quantitative electron diffraction data treatment of unknown structures is described. No "a priori" information is required by the package which is able to perform in successive steps the 2-D indexing of digitised diffraction patterns, the extraction of the intensity of the collected reflections and the 3-D indexing of all recorded patterns, giving as results the lattice parameters of the investigated structure and a series of data files (one for each diffraction pattern) containing the measured intensities and the relative e.s.

September 2000

Istituto di Parassitologia, Università 'la Sapienza', Ple. Aldo Moro 5, 700185, Rome, Italy.

Several cases of human subcutaneous/ocular dirofilariosis caused by Dirofilaria repens from an area in the southeastern Spain where previous epidemiological studies have shown a very low prevalence of this species in dogs, have been studied in our laboratory. Since the prevalence of this species in dogs did not correspond to the incidence of human cases in the zone studied, a preliminary epidemiological survey was carried out on 114 dog blood samples from two kennels and one veterinary clinic.
