Molecules

March 2024

Institute of Technical Chemistry, Clausthal University of Technology, Arnold-Sommerfeld-Straße 4, 38678 Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Germany.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is predominantly characterized by alternating CH and CF units in a polymer backbone, originating from the head-to-tail addition of monomers or regular propagation. Due, to a small extent, to inverse monomer addition, so-called defect structures occur which influence the macroscopic properties of PVDF significantly. The amount of defect structures in the material is determined by the polymerization conditions.

A Study of Deployable Structures Based on Nature Inspired Curved-Crease Folding.

Polymers (Basel)

March 2024

Institute of Polymer Materials and Plastics Technology, Clausthal University of Technology, Agricolastr. 6, 38678 Clausthal, Germany.

Fascinating 3D shapes arise when a thin planar sheet is folded without stretching, tearing or cutting. The elegance amplifies when the fold/crease is changed from a straight line to a curve, due to the association of plastic deformation via folding and elastic deformation via bending. This results in the curved crease working as a hinge support providing deployability to the surface which is of significant interest in industrial engineering and architectural design.

Wood and aluminum composites are becoming increasingly attractive due to their ability to combine the advantages of both materials: the lightweight nature of wood and the strength of aluminum. However, using conventional wood adhesives like polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) to bond these dissimilar materials is challenging and requires special surface treatments. Prior studies have demonstrated that applying a dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment significantly enhances shear and bending strengths in beech wood/aluminum bonds.

A series of bis(thienyl)ethenes (BTEs) possessing perfluorocyclopentene backbones and methoxymethyl groups (MOM) in the 2/2'-positions of the thiophenes was prepared and examined. The substitution pattern of the 5/5'-positions was varied, covering the range from electron-donating to electron-withdrawing. The substituent effects of the absorption wavelengths of the ring-opened and the ring-closed isomers, which are interconverted by reversible 6π-electrocyclizations and cycloreversions, are studied by means of the spectroscopic Hammett equation and the Hammett-Brown equation.

October 2023

Chair of Technical Thermodynamics and Energy Efficient Material Treatment, Institute for Energy Process Engineering and Fuel Technology, Clausthal University of Technology, Agricolastraße 4, 38678, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Germany.

This study investigates the effect of the macromolecular architecture of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) on its thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) behavior and polymorphic crystallization in the PVDF/γ-butyrolactone (PVDF/γ-BL) system. Preparative PVDF fractions with specific macromolecular architecture and phase constitution are generated. The results show that PVDF's macromolecular architecture, particularly the degree of branching and regio-defects, plays a significant role in its temperature-dependent crystallization and resulting polymorphic phases.
