Using a fast electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), zwitterionic electrolytes were studied with regard to changes of resonance frequency and resonance bandwidth after the electrode potential was switched. In addition to a fast change of frequency (within milliseconds), a further, slower process with opposite direction is observed. Their deprotonation gave anions which can be formulated as π-electron rich anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes. Coatings based on titanium nitrides, titanium carbides and silicon carbides can optimize the surface properties of titanium or silicon for various applications ranging from biocompatibility to chemical stability and durability. Here, we investigated a high power (100 W) high pulse repetition rate femtosecond laser process (λ=1030 nm, τ=750 fs, f=1 MHz) for the treatment of titanium and silicon in atmospheres of argon, nitrogen, methane, ethene and acetylene. In a nitrogen atmosphere, a homogeneous coating of TiON is formed on titanium.

In this work, methods of description of crystal nucleation by using the statistical approach are analyzed. Findings from classical nucleation theory (CNT) for the average time of formation of the first supercritical nucleus are linked with experimental data on nucleation in glass-forming liquids stemming from repetitive cooling protocols both under isothermal and isochronal conditions. It is shown that statistical methods of lifetime analysis, frequently used in medicine, public health, and social and behavioral sciences, are applicable to crystal nucleation problems in glass-forming liquids and are very useful tools for their exploration.

The intensity of the reflected measuring beam is greatly reduced for laser-Doppler vibrometer (LDV) measurements on rough surfaces since a considerable part of the light is scattered and cannot reach the photodetector (laser speckle effect). The low intensity of the reflected laser beam leads to a so-called signal dropout, which manifests as noise peaks in the demodulated velocity signal. In such cases, no light reaches the detector at a specific time and, therefore, no signal can be detected.
