Article Abstract

Accurate and accessible glucose detection is essential for clinical diagnostics, point-of-care testing, food safety, and biosensing applications. In this study, we present a simple, scalable, and dual-mode glucose sensor that integrates commercial potassium permanganate (KMnO) with glucose oxidase to enable sensitive and selective detection in the clinically critical range of 1-5 mM. Leveraging the strong oxidative power and distinct optical characteristics of KMnO, the sensor operates via both absorbance measurement at 400 nm and visual colorimetric analysis, displaying a clear color change from purple to pink and yellow upon reaction with glucose. The system achieves a low detection limit of 0.63 mM and demonstrates high specificity, effectively minimizing interference from substances such as maltose, sucrose, galactose, citric acid, thiourea, and uric acid. Recovery rates ranging from 84.8% to 104.8% in glucose-spiked solutions and up to 99.6% in artificial saliva validate its reliability and practical applicability. By combining colorimetric simplicity with quantitative absorbance measurements, this platform provides an efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solution for glucose monitoring with strong potential for integration into disposable test strips, portable devices, and wearable biosensors for real-time health tracking.

Background And Objectives: High-altitude hypoxia is known to impair cardiac microvascular function, a pathophysiological state recognized as coronary microvascular disease (CMVD). This study aimed to investigate the independent association between serum potassium levels and the risk of developing CMVD, after controlling for traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, and smoking.

Methods: This case-control study enrolled 1,175 trainees with long-term exposure to high altitude (≥3,000 m), comprising 235 patients with CMVD (cases) and 940 healthy controls.

Introduction: The α-adrenoceptor (αAR) is involved in the physiopathology of the central nervous system (CNS), but its function in the adult male rat locus coeruleus (LC) has not been fully studied. We aimed to characterize the role of the αAR in the regulation of the firing rate (FR) of LC neurons and to describe the signaling pathways involved.

Methods: We measured, through single-unit extracellular recordings of LC neurons from adult male rats were used to measure the effect of adrenergic agonists in the presence and absence of adrenergic antagonists or inhibitors of several signalling pathways.

Traditional methods for fruit juice preservation use high temperatures, which degrade beneficial compounds like vitamins and antioxidants. Membrane filtration provides a gentler alternative, preserving nutrients through mild operating temperatures. This study assessed the temperature and pressure influence on watermelon juice microfiltration, focusing on permeated flow, lycopene, sugars, phenolic compounds, and flavonoids.

Repeated exposure to gestational general anesthesia during pregnancy has been associated with neurodevelopmental damage and cognitive and social dysfunction in offspring. This study investigates the underlying mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for mitigating these effects. Behavioral tests revealed significant impairments in cognitive, social, and spatial learning abilities in the offspring of general anesthesia-treated mice, alongside delayed eye-opening, reduced body weight, and neuronal damage.
