Single crystal diffraction is one of the most common and powerful tools for structural elucidation. However, obtaining single crystals of adequate size and quality is not always trivial. The "crystalline sponge" method has been used for crystallizing intrinsically amorphous compounds inside a metal organic framework,, but its application is limited by the size and stability of the pores within the networks. Here, we report the use of π-π interactions between C and nanometer-sized molecules that by themselves do not form crystalline compounds. Using this "π-trap" approach, we successfully crystallized adamantane-like clusters exhibiting extreme nonlinear optical properties, which so far resisted any attempt for crystallization. C···cluster interactions enabled long-range order, so the clusters' molecular structures could be precisely determined. Spectroscopy and quantum chemical studies showed that clusters and C behave like being dissolved in each other. This method should be applicable to all kinds of amorphous compounds that undergo π-π interactions.

Background: Iron plaque on the rice rhizoplane could potentially prevent cadmium (Cd) entry into plant roots. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to study the morphological characteristics and mineral compositions of iron plaque, Cd immobilization mechanism by iron plaque, and its effect on Cd uptake and transport in rice.
Results: Exogenous divalent iron ion (Fe(II)) could induce the formation of deep-red iron plaque on rice rhizoplane, which primarily consisted of ferrihydrite, goethite, hematite, iron phosphate, and iron sulfate compounds.

Ischemic reperfusion (I/R) injury is dominated by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidative damage and uncontrolled inflammation, yet effective strategies for simultaneous diagnosis and treatment remain elusive. Herein, we report a defect-engineered amorphous-like MnCeO nanointerceptor with dual capabilities of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) -guided stroke diagnosis and ROS-scavenging therapy. The synergistic effect of the amorphous-like structure and Mn-Ce solid solution induces abundant oxygen vacancies and a disordered surface, significantly boosting ROS catalytic removal.

Almond skin (AS) from industrial almond peeling is considered an agri-food waste with adequate composition to obtain composite films for food packaging due to its richness in polysaccharides, proteins, and phenolic compounds. Composite films based on amorphous polylactic acid (PLA) or partially acetylated polyvinilalcohol (PVA) were obtained by melt blending and compression moulding, incorporating different ratios of defatted AS powder (0, 5, 10, and 15 wt.%).

: Transforming poorly soluble crystalline drugs into their amorphous form is a well-established strategy in pharmaceutical science to enhance their solubility and improve their clinical efficacy. However, developing amorphous forms of organic drugs for pharmaceutical applications presents significant technical hurdles due to the lack of suitable analytical tools for the amorphization process. Carbamazepine is a crystalline BCS class II drug commonly used for epilepsy and trigeminal neuralgia, whose clinical efficacy is compromised by its low solubility and slow dissolution.

: Parenteral nutrition (PN) supports patients unable to receive nutrients via the gastrointestinal tract, but it lacks the health-promoting natural bioactive compounds found in a typical oral diet. This study aimed to develop a human serum albumin-based intravenous delivery system for lutein (an antioxidant carotenoid with vision-supportive and hepatoprotective properties) as a PN additive. : An albumin-lutein nanosuspension (AlbLuteN) was synthesized using a modified nanoparticle albumin-bound (nab) technology and characterized physicochemically.
