Speckle contrast optical spectroscopy (SCOS) is an optical technique capable of measuring human cerebral blood flow and brain function non-invasively. Its tomographic extension, speckle contrast optical tomography (SCOT), can provide blood flow variation maps with measurements using overlapping source-detector channel pairs. Linearity is often assumed in most image reconstruction methods, but non-linearity could exist in the relations between measured signals and blood flow variations. We have constructed a forward model for SCOT using the Rytov approximation to solve the correlation diffusion equation and compared it with the first Born approximation as well as the more accurate, but computationally expensive Monte Carlo simulation approach. We have shown that the results obtained using the Rytov approximation are in good agreement with the Monte Carlo simulations, while the first Born approximation deviates from the other two methods for large blood flow variations. For instance, the first Born approximation breaks down at around 30% cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes within a volume of size 60 × 50 × 40 mm, therefore we recommend using the Rytov approximation above this threshold. We have shown that our defined blood flow index (BFi) measured in SCOT is linearly related to local CBF variations, thus the forward and inverse problems can be solved linearly using the sensitivity matrix approach. We have then demonstrated image reconstruction experimentally showing human brain activations using our recently developed high-density SCOS system. Our method guides experimental system design and data analysis for SCOT.

Background: Nodular hidradenoma (NH) is a rare benign adnexal tumor originating from sweat glands, often misdiagnosed due to nonspecific clinical manifestations. Ultrasonography (US) plays a critical role in the diagnosis of skin tumors, yet systematic descriptions of its sonographic features remain limited.
Objective: This study aims to investigate the very-high-frequency (VHF) characteristics of eccrine nodular hidradenoma (ENH) and establish key imaging criteria to differentiate it from other cutaneous/subcutaneous lesions.

Background: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of daily consumption of white potatoes compared with white rice on cardiometabolic health in individuals with type-2 diabetes (T2D).
Objective: To determine the effects of white potato consumption compared to white rice (a commonly consumed refined grain) on indices of glycemic control and cardiovascular health in individuals with overweight or obesity and T2D.
Methods: In this randomized crossover study, comparative control trial, 24 adults with T2D [45-80 y, body mass index (kg/m) 25-40] consumed baked white potatoes (100 g) or calorie-matched white rice (75 g) daily for 12 wk, separated by a 2-wk washout, with assessments of glycemic control, lipids, inflammation, blood pressure, endothelial function, and body composition at baseline (only 1 baseline visit included as a covariate in statistical analyses), 6 wk, and 12 wk.

Introduction: 5-Hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF) is a furan compound with a molecular formula of CHO. Studies have found that 5-HMF has many pharmacological effects, such as improving hemorheology, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activity and anti-myocardial ischemia. Identifying the preventive effect of 5-HMF against ischemic stroke and its possible mechanism was the aim of this investigation.

Wide-necked anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysms pose challenges for endovascular coiling due to the risk of coil protrusion. This case report describes a new endovascular technique for managing ruptured wide-necked ACoA aneurysms, addressing the risk of coil protrusion during embolization. This method employs a combined microcatheter and guidewire-assisted embolization method, enabling coil deployment without needing adjunctive devices such as stents or balloons.

Background: Mixed-phenotype acute leukemia (MPAL) is a rare acute leukemia for which data are currently not available to guide therapy. It has a poor outcome, particularly in elderly patients.
Case Presentation: We report the successful use of venetoclax/azacitidine as treatment for a treatment-naive elderly patient with early T-cell precursor (ETP)/myeloid MPAL.
