Article Abstract

We report the first, to the best of our knowledge, experimental observation of non-Hermiticity-induced topological bound states in the continuum in photonic trimer lattices. Using femtosecond laser direct writing technology, we fabricate a series of photonic trimer lattices with precisely tailored loss, enabling systematic investigation of the non-Hermiticity-driven topological phase transition from trivial to nontrivial states. Remarkably, these edge states embed but do not hybridize with bulk states, exhibiting counterintuitive localized properties akin to bound states in the continuum. Our work not only broadens the scope of topological photonic materials but also unveils exciting prospects for future exploration of other remarkable bound states in the continuum.

Two-Step Semi-Automated Classification of Choroidal Metastases on MRI: Orbit Localization via Bounding Boxes Followed by Binary Classification via Evolutionary Strategies.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

September 2025

From the Department of Radiology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York, United States of America (J.S.S., B.M., S.H., A.H., J.S.), and Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India (H.S.).

Background And Purpose: The choroid of the eye is a rare site for metastatic tumor spread, and as small lesions on the periphery of brain MRI studies, these choroidal metastases are often missed. To improve their detection, we aimed to use artificial intelligence to distinguish between brain MRI scans containing normal orbits and choroidal metastases.

Materials And Methods: We present a novel hierarchical deep learning framework for sequential cropping and classification on brain MRI images to detect choroidal metastases.

The correlation between Pb species formation and bioaccessibility in alkaline, smelter-impacted soil co-contaminated with other toxic trace elements after treatment with phosphorus-containing amendments was investigated. The soil was collected near a former copper smelter, El Paso, Texas. It contained Pb (3200 ± 142 mg kg), As (254 ± 14 mg kg), and Cd (110 ± 8 mg kg).

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a large DNA virus that causes a highly lethal disease in pigs and currently has no effective vaccines or antiviral treatments available. We designed a protein switch that combines the DNase domain of colicin E9 (DNase E9) and its inhibitor Im9 with the viral protease cleavage site. The complex is only destroyed in the presence of an ASFV pS273R protease, which releases DNase activity.

Unsupervised visible-infrared person reidentification (UVI-ReID) has recently gained great attention due to its potential for enhancing human detection in diverse environments without labeling. Previous methods utilize intramodality clustering and cross-modality feature matching to achieve UVI-ReID. However, there exist two challenges: 1) noisy pseudo-labels might be generated in the clustering process and 2) the cross-modality feature alignment via matching the marginal distribution of visible and infrared modalities may misalign the different identities from the two modalities.

Background: Lateral malleolar avulsion fracture (LMAF) and subfibular ossicle (SFO) are distinct entities that both present as small bone fragments near the lateral malleolus on imaging, yet require different treatment strategies. Clinical and radiological differentiation is challenging, which can impede timely and precise management. On imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the diagnostic gold standard for differentiating LMAF from SFO, whereas radiological differentiation on computed tomography (CT) alone is challenging in routine practice.
