Conventionally, when propagation modeling is conducted for a specific environment, the ground surface is oftentimes treated as a flat one even if the surface profile undulates moderately. This is especially common across various commercial propagation prediction tools, which treat the ground to be a flat surface whenever possible, because doing so will simplify the whole propagation modeling process. However, in cases when the ground surface is not flat in the upfront, special efforts should be made to model the ground surface as it is so that the model can retain the precision results of propagation prediction. In this work, we present a physical representation of terrain irregularities constructed using common materials, acknowledging the electromagnetic limitations of these materials compared to actual ground and building materials. Propagation measurements were conducted at 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz and 24 GHz, and the results are compared against our in-house ray-tracing simulation that has incorporated an integrated scattering factor. The results for 900 MHz are useful for understanding the UHF RFID propagation. Additionally, for all four frequencies, we have further engaged the CST Studio Suite for generating ray-tracing results. The outcome of this work is applicable to places with an uneven terrain, such as a cave. This work also establishes a foundation for future properly scaled models that maintain the relationship between model dimensions and measurement frequencies.

Pufferfish exhibit the smallest vertebrate genomes, making them ideal models for investigating evolutionary patterns and processes that affect genome size. While the Takifugu rubripes genome was fully sequenced two decades ago, key evolutionary drivers remain elusive. We sequenced 10 pufferfish genomes and generated 35 transcriptomes and 13 methylomes to understand genomic evolutionary mechanisms.

Optical imaging offers high sensitivity and specificity for noninvasive cancer detection, but conventional techniques suffer from limited probe accumulation, tissue autofluorescence, and poor depth resolution. Afterglow luminescence overcomes autofluorescence by emitting persistent light after excitation, yet its utility in vivo remains hindered by weak tumor enrichment and two-dimensional readouts lacking spatial context. Here, we report luminescent-magnetic nanoparticles (LM-NPs) coencapsulating luminescent trianthracene (TA) molecules and iron oxide cores within the amphiphilic polymer pluronic-F127.

The acoustic nonlinearity parameter (B/A) could enhance the diagnostic capabilities of conventional ultrasonography and quantitative ultrasound in tissues and diseases. Nonlinear acoustic propagation theory of plane waves has been used to develop a dual-energy model of the depletion of the fundamental related to the Gol'dberg number and subsequently to the B/A of media (a reference phantom is used as a baseline). The depletion method, however, needs a priori information of the attenuation coefficient (AC) of the assessed media.

Accurate three-dimensional localisation of ultrasonic bat calls is essential for advancing behavioural and ecological research. I present a comprehensive, open-source simulation framework-Array WAH-for designing, evaluating, and optimising microphone arrays tailored to bioacoustic tracking. The tool incorporates biologically realistic signal generation, frequency-dependent propagation, and advanced Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) localisation algorithms, enabling precise quantification of both positional and angular accuracy.

The internal resistance of axons to ionic current flow determines action potential conduction velocity. Although mitochondria support axonal function, axons have been modeled as organelle-free cables, and mitochondrial impact on conduction velocity, specifically by increasing internal resistance, remains understudied. We combine computational modeling and electron microscopy of forebrain premotor axons controlling birdsong production.
