Aims: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) related cognitive impairment links to comorbid and modifiable olfactory dysfunction; however, the efficacy of olfactory training (OT) to mitigate cognitive decline specifically in these patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains unestablished. This study aimed to determine whether OT alleviates cognitive decline in this population.
Materials And Methods: In this 16-week, open-label trial, 60 T2D participants with MCI were randomly assigned (1:1) to OT or routine care (control).

Introduction: Odor imagery (OI), or the ability to mentally simulate the presence of a smell, is a difficult cognitive function and is therefore misunderstood in terms of its neural underpinnings. In particular, the diverging results obtained in neuroimaging studies could be explained in part by the characteristics of the visual cues used to trigger this task. In this study, we investigated this question by comparing the effects of plain color patches, pictures, and words during OI using neurophysiological and psychometrical measurements.

Inhibitory local interneurons (LNs) play an essential role in sensory processing by refining stimulus representations via a diverse collection of mechanisms. The morphological and physiological traits of individual LN types, as well as their connectivity within sensory networks, enable each LN type to support different computations such as lateral inhibition or gain control and are therefore ideal targets for modulatory neurons to have widespread impacts on network activity.
