The chronic small-business closure has emerged as a critical economic issue in South Korea, considering more than half of businesses have been closed within three years. While some previous literature has analyzed the causes and their negative impacts on the economy, there is still a lack of studies on understanding the pattern dynamics and predicting future possible closure scenarios due to the lack of appropriate data. Using 3,000,000 individual commercial facility data from 2004 to 2018 in Seoul, Korea, the primary purpose of this research is two-fold: (1) to develop a methodological framework to simulate survival rate pattern change using a deep-learning based model and (2) to reclassify the commercial districts based on the prediction outcomes to 8 survival rate change types. The results indicate that the LSTM model can be useful in predicting and simulating the survival rate of commercial facilities. Moreover, the CBD area showed a decrease in the survival rate in the future, and the commercial districts around university districts and IT industry clusters were divided into commercial districts with an increased survival rate in the future. The results of this study are expected to be used as quantitative evidence for more direct and realistic policy establishment.

Objectives: The Charlson comorbidity index reflects overall comorbidity burden and has been applied in cardiovascular medicine. However, its role in predicting in-hospital mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) complicated by ventricular arrhythmias (VA) remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of the Charlson comorbidity index in this setting and to construct a nomogram model for early risk identification and individualized management to improve outcomes.

Bortezomib resistance in multiple myeloma (MM) is a significant clinical challenge that limits the long-term effectiveness. Currently, there is a lack of reliable biomarkers to predict bortezomib resistance. Previous studies reported that several proteins regulate bortezomib resistance through targeting ubiquitin-proteasome pathways, including heat shock protein family A member 9 (HSPA9), dickkopf Wnt signaling pathway inhibitor 1 (DKK1), proteasome 26S subunit non-ATPase 14 (PSMD14), and tripartite motif containing 21 (TRIM21).

Background/aims: Despite medical advances in recent decades, the mortality rate of advanced liver cirrhosis remains high. Although liver transplantation remains the most effective treatment, candidate selection is limited by donor availability and alcohol abstinence requirements. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BM-MSC) transplantation has shown promise for the treatment of advanced cirrhosis.

Patients with multiple myeloma develop resistance to thalidomide during therapy, and the mechanisms to counteract thalidomide resistance remain elusive. Here, we explored the interaction between cereblon and mitochondrial function to mitigate thalidomide resistance in multiple myeloma. Measurements of cell viability, ATP production, mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial ROS, and protein expression via western blotting were conducted in vitro using KSM20 and KMS26 cells to assess the impact of thalidomide on multiple myeloma.

Objectives: To study the impact of SURF4 expression level on long-term prognosis of gastric cancer (GC) and biological behaviors of GC cells.
Methods: SURF4 expression level in GC and its association with long-term patient prognosis were analyzed using publicly available databases and in 155 GC patients with low and high SURF4 expressions detected immunohistochemically. The Cox proportional hazard model and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to analyze independent prognostic predictors of GC and the 5-year survival rate of the patients with different SURF4 expression levels.
