Insects rely on chemoreceptors in sensory neurons to detect and discriminate various chemicals in constantly changing environments. Among the chemoreceptors, odorant receptors (ORs) and gustatory receptors (GRs) play essential roles in sensing different odorant and tastant molecules, thereby regulating insects' physiology and behaviors such as feeding, mating, and alarming. ORs and GRs are evolutionarily related seven-transmembrane helical proteins that constitute a large family of tetrameric ion channels. In recent years, great progress has been made in the structures and molecular mechanisms of insect ORs and GRs. In this review, we summarize the available structures of insect ORs and GRs, analyze their diverse ligand recognition modes, and examine their conserved ligand activation mechanisms. These structural analyses will not only enhance our understanding of the molecular basis of insect ORs and GRs but also provide critical insights for the future discovery of repellents and attractants.

The mechanisms of chemoreception in fig wasps (Hymenoptera, Agaonidae) are of primary importance in their co-evolutionary relationship with the fig trees they pollinate. As the supplementary receptors to odorant receptors (ORs) and gustatory receptors (GRs) in insects, we compare the evolutionary characters of ionotropic receptors (IRs) among 25 fig wasp taxa in six genera. In total, we identified 205 IRs in 25 fig wasps, with each taxon recording from 5 to 12 IR genes.

Bees are palynivorous insects that vary widely in the number of plant families from which they collect pollen. Their evolutionary history has been marked by multiple transitions in diet breadth between specialists that only visit specific plant genera (narrow diet breadth) and generalists that visit multiple large plant families (broad diet breadth). Understanding the evolution of sensory systems associated with changes in the detection, discrimination, and gustation of different pollen in bees can shed light on the underlying genetic mechanisms associated with transitions between narrow and broad diet breadths.
