Article Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of wearing elastic ankle braces under anticipated and unanticipated conditions on lower limb biomechanics during badminton lunge steps and assess the associated risks of ankle and knee joint injuries.

Methods: Sixteen male badminton players performed left-front lunges in four scenarios (anticipated/unanticipated conditions× with/without brace), assessed via 3D motion capture (Qualisys, 200 Hz) and force plates (Kistler, 1000 Hz), a two-factor repeated measures ANOVA and Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) were used to analyze the data.

Results: Wearing ankle braces reduced the peak ankle inversion moment (p = 0.042) but increased the knee valgus angle of the movement (p < 0.006) compared to without brace under anticipated conditions. The main effect of unanticipation significantly increased the peak ankle inversion angle (p = 0.003) and knee varus moment (p = 0.024) compared to anticipated conditions.

Conclusion: Elastic ankle braces can potentially reduce ankle injury risk during badminton lunges but may increase stress on the knee joint, particularly under unanticipated conditions. These findings suggest that while ankle braces are beneficial for ankle protection, caution is needed due to their potential impact on knee joint mechanics.

Acute ankle sprains frequently lead to chronic ankle instability and muscle atrophy by causing immobilization, which necessitates real-time stiffness modulation for ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs). This paper proposes Active Variable Compression Shoes (AVC-Shoes), an ankle support system inspired by the "heel-lock taping" technique, which employs a wire-fabric compression mechanism to selectively stiffen ankle joints at crucial points in the gait cycle. The experimental results confirmed that AVC-Shoes achieve variable ankle stiffness in all directions, demonstrating dorsiflexion and plantarflexion stiffness ranges of up to 8.

Running-related injuries are the most common reason to quit running. There is a gap of knowledge on the use of running equipment as a predictor of running-related injuries in running populations. To investigate if runners not using equipment while running have a higher rate of running-related injuries compared with runners using running equipment.

Objective: To explore the effectiveness of QIN Sihe's surgical strategy combined with Ilizarov technique in treating foot and ankle deformities on the verge of amputation.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 56 patients (62 feet) with foot and ankle deformities on the verge of amputation treated with QIN Sihe's surgical strategy and Ilizarov technique between May 2010 and December 2020. Among them, there were 39 males and 17 females.
