Article Abstract

Objective: To develop an acoustic model to predict the variability in the auditory perception of the overall severity (OS) of vocal deviation in male and female voices of Brazilian Portuguese speakers.

Method: In total, 300 vocal samples (sustained vowel [a] and connected speech) from adults of both sexes (235 women and 65 men) were analyzed, including 269 individuals with dysphonia and 31 individuals without dysphonia. Five speech-language pathologists carried out the auditory-perceptual judgment of the OS using an analog-visual scale of 100 mm. A script in the free Praat software was used to extract 47 acoustic measurements. Three linear regression models were developed using the stepwise technique to select the acoustic measurements capable of explaining the variability of the auditory-perceptual judgment of the OS in the general group and for male and female voices separately.

Results: The general model accounted for 66.3% of the variability in OS perception using five acoustic measures, illustrating how periodicity, harmonic structure, and spectral noise across various frequency bands interact to elucidate the clinical perception of vocal quality. For male voices, a more streamlined model employing only two acoustic measures explained 64.9% of the variability, emphasizing that regularity in glottal cycles and low-frequency noise are pivotal factors in the perceptual assessment of male vocal quality. The model for female voices achieved the highest explanatory power at 71.2% with five acoustic measures, suggesting that OS perception in women involves a complex interplay of signal periodicity, noise components across different frequency bands, and variations in fundamental frequency, highlighting the multifaceted nature of assessing female vocal quality.

Conclusions: The acoustic models developed predicted 66% of the variability in the perception of OS for voices in general, 65% of the variability in the perception of OS for male voices, and 71% of the variability in OS for female voices.

Background: Effective communication between ICU nurses and patients' families is essential in ensuring optimal care, reducing anxiety, and enhancing decision-making. However, communication difficulties persist globally, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs) where patients are in critical condition and their families are distressed. Aim To explore the lived experiences of ICU nurses and family members in Jordan to understand how nurse workload, emotional stress, and cultural expectations influence the quality, clarity, and emotional tone of communication in intensive care settings.

Influence of second dialect use on the production of first dialect lexical tonesa).

Department of Linguistics, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa 52242, USA.

This study focuses on suprasegmental features and investigates how the use of a second tonal dialect influences the production of tones in the first dialect among bidialectal speakers of Chengdu Mandarin (CM) and Standard Mandarin (SM). Using a word-naming task, this study analyzed the acoustic differences between tones in SM and CM that share similar pitch contours and assessed the impact of SM use on CM tone production. How bidialectal listeners perceptually map SM tones onto CM categories was further evaluated using a dissimilarity rating task.

Department of Health Studies, The Research Group for Person-Centeredness in an Ageing Society, Fontys University of Applied Sciences, Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

Aim: To explore how nurses were represented in five Dutch newspapers between 2019 and 2022, with a focus on their visibility in policy and decision-making.

Background: The media significantly shape public understanding of healthcare. Despite their key role, nurses are often underrepresented in media, especially in policy-related coverage.

Background: Nigeria is the seventh-most populous country in the world. Its high fertility rate and unmet need for family planning contribute to the increasing population size. To reduce this gap, the Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with Injectables Access Collaborative and other public and private sector players, introduced the subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC) to the contraceptive method mix in 2017.
