Huangshui, a characteristic byproduct of Chinese liquor production, was first used as an additive to promote the production of prodigiosin with Serratia marcescens Ka3 in a 5 L bioreactor. Based on the prodigiosin levels in the peptone glycerol medium, the yield of prodigiosin reached 48,341 mg/L after adding 1% Huangshui following 60 h of fermentation, which is currently a high yield in bioreactors. The purity of the prodigiosin extracted from the fermentation broth and purified using a microporous filter membrane was 97%. Purified prodigiosin showed significant inhibitory effects on human lung carcinoma A549 cells and human colon adenocarcinoma HT29 cells. It also inhibited the human gastric adenocarcinoma SGC7901 cells, albeit not significantly. The IC of prodigiosin against A549, HT29, and SGC7901 cells were 0.39 μg/mL, 0.45 μg/mL, and 1.30 μg/mL, respectively. The results of the present study showed that prodigiosin production using Huangshui had the advantages of high yield, simple purification, high purity, and anticancer activity. Therefore, Huangshui is a potential additive that promotes the production of microbial secondary metabolites such as prodigiosin.

The electron-deficient oxidant 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) has recently emerged as a promising visible-light photoredox catalyst. However, its excited-state behavior remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of photoexcited DDQ in acetonitrile using transient electronic and infrared absorption spectroscopy, supported by quantum chemical calculations.

Purpose: The development of on-board cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has led to improved target localization and evaluation of patient anatomical change throughout the course of radiation therapy. HyperSight, a newly developed on-board CBCT platform by Varian, has been shown to improve image quality and HU fidelity relative to conventional CBCT. The purpose of this study is to benchmark the dose calculation accuracy of Varian's HyperSight cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) on the Halcyon platform relative to fan-beam CT-based dose calculations and to perform end-to-end testing of HyperSight CBCT-only based treatment planning.

Background: Gender disparities persist in medical research. This study assessed gender representation trends in first and senior authorships in the five highest-ranked critical care journals (by impact factor) over a 20-year period.
Methods: We analyzed author gender distribution from 2005 to 2024.

An Ag-functionalized structural color hydrogel (Ag-SCH) sensor is constructed for colorimetric detection of glutathione (GSH). The hydrogel is prepared by using the coordination of Ag and 1-vinylimidazole (1-VI) as cross-linking network. GSH acts as a competitive ligand to break the coordination between Ag and 1-VI, leading to the expansion and structural color change of the hydrogel.

The polymerization mechanism and the identification of key oligomer intermediates during the thermal condensation of benzoguanamine (BG) remain unclear. Herein, we report a novel mixed thermal condensation strategy using BG and a pre-synthesized dimer to selectively synthesize the trimer (BG) with a significantly enhanced yield. Comprehensive characterization techniques confirm the formation of a linear molecular structure for (BG).
