Article Abstract

High-voltage cycling of layered cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries presents challenges related to structural instability. Deciphering atomic-scale structural degradation mechanisms is essential for improving their electrochemical performance at high voltages. This study utilized advanced electron microscopy and principal component analysis to detect subtle spinel-like structure induced by the migration of cobalt atoms within LiCoO subjected to high-voltage cycling at charge voltages of 4.6 and 4.8 V. The formation of the spinel-like configuration was accompanied by the emergence of a densified O1 phase beneath thin spinel-like layer on the (003) facets during charging, along with an intriguing local O3- to P3-type oxygen stacking transition observed in LiCoO charged to 4.8 V. Upon discharge, an enlarged and defective spinel phase preferentially formed on the non-(003) facets, and the migrated cobalt atoms cannot fully return to their original lattice sites, leading to the irreversible structural changes in LiCoO. Long-term cycling revealed that the initial extended spinel phase underwent voltage-dependent evolution pathways, which contributed to accelerated capacity fading observed at the cutoff voltage of 4.8 V. Our findings provide new insights into the atomic-level structural transitions in LiCoO under high-voltage conditions, offering guidance for the development of more structurally robust LiCoO for high-voltage applications.

Supporting the transition from pediatric to adult oncology presents challenges for all stakeholders, including adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients, their parents, pediatric oncologists, and medical oncologists. In this article, we describe the different stages of this transition and the transfer of care, the obstacles to the transition, and potential solutions. We discuss the contribution of AYA care in oncology through collaborations between pediatric and medical oncologists, and the importance of multidisciplinary support for patient empowerment.

The E76K mutation in protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) SHP2 is a recurrent driver of developmental disorders and cancers, yet the mechanism by which this single-site substitution promotes persistent activation remains elusive. Here, we combine path-based conformational sampling, unbiased molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, Markov state models (MSMs), and neural relational inference (NRI) to elucidate how E76K reshapes the activation landscape and regulatory architecture of SHP2. Using a minimum-action trajectory derived from experimentally determined closed and open structures, we generated representative transition intermediates to guide the unbiased MD simulations.

Voltage-dependence gating of ion channels underlies numerous physiological and pathophysiological processes, and disruption of normal voltage gating is the cause of many channelopathies. Here, long timescale atomistic simulations were performed to directly probe voltage-induced gating transitions of the big potassium (BK) channels, where the voltage sensor domain (VSD) movement has been suggested to be distinct from that of canonical Kv channels but remains poorly understood. Using a Core-MT construct without the gating ring, multiple voltage activation transitions were observed at 750 mV, allowing detailed analysis of the activated state of BK VSD and key mechanistic features.

In this study, using a set of scanning probe microscopy techniques, we investigate the electronic properties of the domain walls in the layered ferroelectric semiconductor of the transition metal oxide dihalide family, NbOI. Although the uniaxial ferroelectricity of NbOI allows only 180° domain walls, the pristine 2D flakes, where polarization is aligned in-plane, typically exhibit a variety of as-grown domain patterns outlined by the electrically neutral and charged domain walls. The electrically biased probing tip can modify the as-grown domain structures.
