Article Abstract

The redox activities of polyaniline (PANI) are hindered by the instability of pernigraniline salt (PS) state which degrades into oligo-aniline. In this work, the use of protic additives is examined to mitigate capacity fading and increase utilization of PANI in nonaqueous electrolytes. The protic additive propylene glycol, with its hydrogen-bonding capabilities, stabilizes the PS PANI and promotes reversible redox reactions, facilitating high capacity and an extended cycle lifetime for applications in metal ion supercapacitors. The use of this protic nonaqueous electrolyte in a PANI-zinc device results in an energy density of 255 Wh kg at a power density of 1.8 kW kg and a robust cycle lifetime of 3,850 charge/discharge cycles. The PANI at a high current density of 6.5 mA cm reaches a capacity of 257 mAh g, equivalent to 87% of the its theoretical capacity, showcasing the effectiveness of the protic additive in improving both capacity and cycle life in electrochemical supercapacitors.

Resonant three-photon ionization spectroscopy has been used to study the late 4d and 5d transition metal carbides RuC, RhC, OsC, IrC, and PtC. These species, like most diatomic transition metals with open nd subshells, exhibit an exceptionally high density of states near the ground separated atom limit. Spin-orbit and nonadiabatic interactions provide a means for the molecules to rapidly dissociate as soon as the bond dissociation energy (BDE) is exceeded.

Unveiling Ion-Transport Dynamics in 2D Nanofluidic Anion-Selective Membranes toward Osmotic Energy Harvesting.

Two-dimensional (2D) nanofluidic architectures with nanoconfined interlayer channels and excess surface charges have revolutionized membrane-based reverse electrodialysis systems, demonstrating highly efficient osmotic energy collection through strong electrostatic screening of electric double layer (EDL). However, the ion-transport dynamics in 2D nanofluidic anion-selective membranes (2D-NAMs) still remain unexplored. Here, we combine density functional theory and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to systematically explore ion transport in the 2D-NAMs.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, the etiological agent of Typhoid fever, remains a critical public health concern associated with high morbidity in many developing countries. The widespread emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella Typhi strains against the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics, particularly ciprofloxacin, poses a significant global therapeutic challenge with underlying resistance due to mutations in quinolone-resistance determining region (QRDR) of gyrA gene, encoding DNA gyrase subunit A (GyrA). In pursuit of alternative therapeutic candidates, the present study was designed to evaluate ciprofloxacin analogues against prevalent GyrA mutations (S83F, D87G, and D87N) to overcome fluoroquinolone resistance through machine learning (ML)-based approach.

Conventional acid-catalyzed acetalization faces significant challenges in catalyst recovery and poses environmental concerns. Herein, we develop a CeO-supported Pd single-atom catalyst (Pd/CeO) that eliminates the reliance on liquid acids by creating a localized H-rich microenvironment through heterolytic H activation. X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analyses confirm the atomic dispersion of Pd via Pd-O-Ce coordination, while density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) that facilitate electron transfer from CeO oxygen to Pd, downshifting the Pd d-band center and optimizing H activation.

Models for polymer dynamics from dimensionality reduction techniques.

Polymer dynamics is analyzed through the lens of linear dimensionality reduction methods, in particular principal and time-lagged independent component analysis (tICA). For a polymer undergoing ideal Rouse dynamics, the slow modes identified by these transformations coincide with the conventional Rouse modes. When applied to the Fourier modes of the segment density, we show that tICA generates dynamics equivalent to dynamic self-consistent field theory (D-SCFT) with a wavevector-dependent Onsager coefficient and a free energy functional subject to the random phase approximation.
