Article Abstract

Multiple interaction strategy to target was tried to use in the design of surface imprinting polymer. To validate this, active chlorogenic acid, a representative phenolic acid compound existing in many natural products, was selected as the template molecule and a magnetic molecularly imprinted nanoparticles (CGA-MMIPs) was synthesized. The characterizations indicated CGA-MMIPs was 20-50 nm, stable below 229.56 °C and had a saturation magnetic intensity of 17.90 emu/g. The prepared CGA-MMIPs exhibited high adsorption capacity (441.81 mg/g) and fast adsorption equilibrium for chlorogenic acid. It also was easy separation, high selectivity and good reusability, which was successfully used in quick separation of chlorogenic acid from Orthosiphon aristatus and Taraxacum mongolicum and Salvia miltiorrhiza. Moreover, the isolated substances possessed great antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities. These verified the strategy was useful and had huge prospects in the quick separation of chlorogenic acid or other phenolic acid compounds from natural products.

Eucommia ulmoides Oliver leaf is rich in chlorogenic acid, which has antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activities. In this work, a new and green strategy for functional hyper-crosslinked adsorption resin based on Friedel-Crafts reaction of pendant vinyl groups in divinylbenzene with anhydrous ethanol and acrylamide grafting polymerization was developed, and the obtained HCREt-AM resin had excellent performance on chlorogenic acid separation from Eucommia ulmoides Oliver leaf extract. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics study showed the adsorption process fitted by Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation.

The growing interest in prebiotic ingredients has led to the valorization of agri-food by-products, such as coffee silverskin, known for its richness in dietary fiber and health-promoting compounds. This study evaluated the impact of in vitro simulation of gastrointestinal digestion on the chemical composition (carbohydrates, caffeine, and chlorogenic acids) and prebiotic potential (probiotic growth, organic acid production, pH, and antioxidant activity) of milled coffee silverskin. The results show stability of polysaccharides during digestion, while caffeine and 5-caffeoylquinic acid were partially released into the bioaccessible fraction.

Phenolic Profile as a Powerful Machine Learning Tool for Identification, Traceability, and Quality Control of Olive Cultivars.

This study investigates the phenolic and fatty acid profiles of olives from four cultivars (Arbequina, Arbosana, Frantene, and Koroneiki), widely grown in the Mediterranean region and collected at different ripening stages in Italy. The aim was to assess the potential of olive chemical profiles as markers for cultivar classification using machine learning algorithms, including Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Naive Bayes (NB), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Results showed that phenolic profiling achieved significantly higher classification accuracy than fatty acids across all models.
