Despite extensive research on MgO's reactivity in the presence of CO under various conditions, little is known about whether impurities incorporated into the solid, such as iron, enhance or impede hydroxylation and carbonation reactions. The purity of the MgO required for the successful implementation of MgO looping as a direct air capture technology affects the deployment costs. With this motivation, we tested how incorporated iron impacts MgO (100) reactivity and passivation layer formation under ambient conditions by using atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, and synchrotron-based X-ray scattering. Based on electron microprobe analysis, our MgO samples were 0.5 wt % iron, and Mössbauer spectroscopy results indicated that 70% of the iron is present as Fe. We find that even these low levels of iron dopants impeded both the hydroxylation at various relative humidities (10%, 33%, 75%, and >95%) and carbonation in CO (33%, 75%, and >95%) on the (100) surface. Crystalline reaction products were formed. Reaction layers on the sample were easily removed by exposing the sample to deionized water for 2 min. Overall, our findings demonstrate that the presence of iron dopants slows the reaction rate of MgO, indicating that MgO without incorporated iron is preferable for mineral looping applications.

The electrolyte-electrode interface serves as the foundation for a myriad of chemical and physical processes. In battery chemistry, the formation of a well-known solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the reversible operations of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, characterizing the precise chemical composition of the low crystallinity and highly sensitive SEI presents a formidable challenge.

At the glutamatergic synapses between rod photoreceptors and ON-type bipolar cells, neurotransmitter is detected by the postsynaptic metabotropic glutamate receptor mGluR6. This receptor forms trans-synaptic interactions with ELFN1, a presynaptic cell adhesion molecule expressed in rods, and ELFN1 is important for mGluR6 localization at bipolar cell dendritic tips. Here, we show that in mice of either sex lacking mGluR6, the presynaptic localization of ELFN1 is disrupted.

Public health problems caused by foodborne illnesses have become increasingly serious. Although it was usually regarded as an opportunistic pathogen causing urinary tract infections in humans, recent years have seen an increasing number of foodborne infections related to P. mirabilis.

Glycolipids are key structural and functional components of biological membranes, yet their interfacial hydration behavior remains poorly understood. Here, we use vibrational heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy to probe the molecular structure of the air-water interface formed by monolayers of ohmline, a glycolipid bearing a lactose headgroup and carrying no formal charge. Upon electrolyte addition, we observe a striking reorientation of interfacial water and a reversal of the HD-SFG signal, indicative of apparent surface charging by an otherwise neutral headgroup.
