Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are prevalent emerging contaminants in agricultural environments. The uptake of PAEs by crop plants has attracted extensive attention due to the risks posed to human health through transfer in food chains. Despite its importance, the interaction between PAEs and crop plants remains poorly understood. In this critical review, the occurrence of six priority control PAEs in various food crops grown in greenhouses and conventional farms is investigated, with detected concentrations reaching up to mg/kg (dry weight) levels. PAEs enter plants through roots, foliar gas, or foliar particle uptake. After entry, PAEs exhibit acropetal translocation from the root and basipetal translocation from the leaf. PAEs are transformed into various metabolites through hydroxylation, hydrolysis, and oxidation in phase I metabolism and further conjugated with biomolecules such as amino acids or sugars in phase II metabolism. Exposure to PAEs disrupts plant homeostasis and activated antioxidant enzymes to alleviate phytotoxicity. Dietary intake of PAEs-contaminated food crops presents potential risks to human health, particularly from fruit and root vegetables consumed by children, warranting specific attention. Furthermore, current knowledge gaps and future perspectives are proposed. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of the knowledge on the uptake, translocation, and transformation of PAEs in crop plants, emphasizing the need for an integrated investigation into the full life cycle of PAEs in plants to ensure food safety.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the toxic metals (TMs) pollution, bioaccumulation and its potential health risk via consumption of different vegetables irrigated by different water sources released from industrial estates of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Water (fresh and waste), soil and vegetables samples were collected in triplicates and acid digested. Digestion of samples were followed by evaporation and filtration and then assessed for TMs via atomic absorption spectrophotometer.

The aim of the study was to reduce the chemical fertilizers with microbial inoculant-rich vermicompost, which enhanced the growth, flowering, and soil health of the tuberose crop. A total of six treatments were applied with reducing doses of synthetic fertilizers under a factorial randomized design and replicated thrice. In this study, vermicompost (VC) made from cow dung and vegetable waste utilizing Eisenia foetida and their mixed biomass were enriched with microbial inoculants and assessed for their impact on microbial and enzymatic populations including urease, acid phosphatase activity and dehydrogenase activity in soil, nutrient availability, and tuberose development and flowering.

Due to the growing environmental and health concerns with chemical plant stimulants, there is a growing need to find alternative sources of plant stimulants that could help the seeds germinate and sustain their growth in the global climate change scenario. The article compares various seed stimulants such as chemical compounds (benzothiadiazole, salicylic acid, glycine betaine), alcoholic extracts from commercial plant products (English oak bark, ginger spices, turmeric spices, caraway fruits) and from wild plant leaves (Japanese pagoda tree, Himalayan balsam, stinging nettle and Bohemian knotweed) and their effects on wheat seed germination and seedling characteristics. It was found that BTH had significantly lower effect on seedling characteristics such as SG3 (%), SG5 (%), R/S III, SVI I (mm) and SVI III (mg) followed by ZO on SG3 (%), SG5 (%) and GI (unit).

The German Federal Ex Situ Genebank for Agricultural and Horticultural Crops (IPK) harbours over 3000 pea plant genetic resources (PGRs), backed up by corresponding information across 16 key agronomic and economical traits. The unbalanced structure and inconsistent format of this historical data has precluded effective leverage of genebank accessions, despite the opportunities contained in its genetic diversity. Therefore, a three-step statistical approach founded in linear mixed models was implemented to enable a rigorous and targeted data curation.
