Article Abstract

Research Background: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition marked by symptoms including aphasia and diminished verbal fluency. Researchers have employed phonetic attributes, fluency, pauses, and various paralinguistic traits, or derived aspects from transcribed text, to identify Alzheimer's disease.

Methods And Methodology: Nevertheless, conventional acoustic feature-based detection techniques are constrained in their ability to capture semantic information, and the process of transcribing speech into text is both time-consuming and labour-intensive. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NBS), encompassing methods such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS), has been investigated as a potential intervention to enhance cognitive functions and communication in Alzheimer's patients, demonstrating efficacy in modulating brain activity and promoting neuroplasticity. This research utilises Discrete Variational Autoencoders to transform speech into pseudo-phoneme sequences, subsequently applying the BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) model to analyse the relationships among these pseudo-phoneme sequences. This research proposes a tFUS-BERT model to encapsulate the linguistic representations of audio.

Result Analysis: The proposed tFUS-BERT model demonstrated its effectiveness with an accuracy of 76.06 % when combined with Wav2vec 2.0 and 71.83 % with Hu-BERT, outperforming the baseline by 5.63 % on the ADReSSo dataset. Additionally, the model exhibited superior performance in capturing linguistic representations compared to traditional acoustic methods, showcasing its potential for accurate and scalable Alzheimer's detection.

Comparison With Previous Studies: The model attains an accuracy of 70.42 % on the ADReSSo (Alzheimer's Dementia Recognition through Spontaneous Speech Only) dataset, reflecting a 5.63 % enhancement compared to the baseline system.

Active inference offers a unified framework in which agents can exhibit both goal-directed and epistemic behaviors. However, implementing policy search in high-dimensional continuous action spaces presents challenges in terms of scalability and stability. Our previously proposed model, T-GLean, addressed this issue by enabling efficient goal-directed planning through low-dimensional latent space search, further reduced by conditioning on prior habituated behavior.

Tungsten disulfide (WS), a two-dimensional layered material with favorable electronic properties, has been explored as a promising negative electrode material for calcium-ion batteries (CIBs). Despite its use in monovalent systems, its performance in divalent Ca intercalation remains poorly understood. Herein, a combined theoretical and experimental framework is used to elucidate the electronic mechanisms underlying Ca intercalation.

Stability of parametrically driven, damped nonlinear Dirac solitons.

Departamento de Física Aplicada I, ETSII, Universidad de Sevilla, Avda Reina Mercedes s/n, 41012 Sevilla, Spain.

The linear stability of two exact stationary solutions of the parametrically driven, damped nonlinear Dirac equation is investigated. Stability is ascertained through the resolution of the eigenvalue problem, which stems from the linearization of this equation around the exact solutions. On the one hand, it is proven that one of these solutions is always unstable, which confirms previous analysis based on a variational method.

Conventional approaches to analyzing electrocardiograms (ECG) in discrete parameters (such as the PR interval) ignored the high dimensionality of data omitted subtle but relevant information. We applied a variational auto-encoder to learn the underlying distributions of the ECG of 41,927 UK Biobank participants, generating 32-dimensional representation (latent factors). The latent factors showed correlations to conventional ECG parameters and strong associations to cardiac phenotypes estimated from magnetic resonance imaging.

An efficient numerical approach utilizing a variational weak form, grounded in 2D elastic theory and variational principles, is proposed for analyzing the in-plane vibrational behavior of rectangular plates resting on elastically restrained boundaries. The differential and integral operators can be discretized into matrix representations employing the differential quadrature method (DQM) and Taylor series expansion techniques. The discretization of dynamics equations stems directly from a weak formulation that circumvents the need for any transformation or discretization of higher-order derivatives encountered in the corresponding strong equations.
