Article Abstract

Food and agricultural commodities endure consistent contamination by mycotoxins, low molecular weight fungal metabolites, which pose severe health implications to humans together with staggering economic losses. Herein, a ratiometric aptasensor was constructed using silver-coated porous silicon (Ag-pSi) used as an efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. The bioassay included direct detection of fumonisin B (FB), an abundant and widespread contaminant, by a specific aptamer sequence immobilized on the porous transducer. The inherent surface void and pore morphology were physically optimized to achieve a sufficient SERS effect (enhancement factor > 5 × 10). Under optimal conditions, the aptasensor exhibits high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, signal stability, selectivity and regeneration for consecutive FB detection (0.05 ppb, 0.1-1000 ppb, RSD of 5.2 %, no interference with competing mycotoxins and eight regeneration cycles, respectively). The efficacy of the designed aptasensor was elucidated in various spiked matrices (maize, onion, wheat and milk) with averaged recovery values of 93.3-113.6 % and satisfactory consistency with HPLC data for representative foodstuffs. Overall, the resulting validation emphasizes the transducer's reliability and suitability for practical use, including on-site analysis.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is one of the most toxic mycotoxins that pose great health threats to humans. Herein, an aptasensor-based fluorescent signal amplification strategy is developed for the detection of AFB1. Initially, the AFB1 aptamers labelled with carboxyfluorescein (FAM) are adsorbed onto graphene oxide (GO), triggering energy transfer.

Long-term intake of fumonisin B1 (FB1) can pose a threat to human health. It is essential to develop an accurate and sensitive method to detect FB1. In this work, a photoelectrochemical-fluorescence (PEC-FL) dual-mode aptamer sensing platform was proposed for FB1 analysis.

Fumonisins, primarily produced by spp. and , are common contaminants in maize, cereal grains, and other processed and derived products, representing a significant risk to food safety and public health. This study presents the development and optimisation of a high-performance liquid chromatography method with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) for the quantification of fumonisin B1 (FB1) and B2 (FB2) in various food matrices.

Mycotoxins represent a group of highly toxic secondary metabolites produced by diverse fungal pathogens. Mycotoxin contaminations frequently occur in foods and feed and pose significant risks to human and animal health due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic, and immunosuppressive properties. Notably, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, fumonisins (mainly including fumonisins B1, B2, and FB3), aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), and T-2/HT-2 toxins are the major mycotoxin contaminants in foods and feed.

Aflatoxins are carcinogenic secondary metabolites produced by species and are common contaminants of many crops including maize. Atoxigenic strains, formulated as biocontrol products such as Aflasafe TZ01, that comprises a mixture of four native atoxigenic strains, are used as pre-harvest agents to suppress toxigenic strains and reduce aflatoxin levels. This study assessed the intended and potential unintended impacts of Aflasafe TZ01 on mycotoxin contamination in maize.
