Article Abstract

Terahertz (THz) waves have been widely hailed as a key enabling technology for future sixth generation (6G) wireless networks. Dynamic modulation of their polarization states is of great attraction for high-capacity communications and anisotropic sensing. The development of such technology is, however, still in very early stage owing to the difficulties of realizing electrical reconfigurability for THz devices. Artificially constructed metasurfaces and new nanomaterials, such as graphene, have been shown to provide revolutionary platforms for manipulating and controlling the wave properties, especially at THz frequencies. This work leverages the light-matter interaction in a graphene-integrated metasurface functioning as an electrically reconfigurable THz polarization converter. A novel graphene-gold bilayer topology is applied to construct such a metasurface which enables wide-range electrical tunability of the polarization conversion. Under a -polarized illumination, the reflected components of - and -polarizations are tuned dynamically through an external bias voltage across the metasurface, thereby producing an elliptically polarized wave with tuneable ellipticity and angle. By changing the voltage from 0 V to 12 V, the reflected polarization ellipticity has been tuned from -0.94 to -0.5 at around 240 GHz, featuring linear-to-circular and linear-to-elliptical polarization conversions. Meanwhile, the polarization angle has been modulated from 12° to -23° at around 236 GHz. This work provides an experimentally validated THz graphene-integrated metasurface with wide polarization modulation depths, low biasing voltages and simple configuration. It promises great potential for applications in future THz communications and sensing.

Dynamic tuning of terahertz (THz) electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is of great significance for THz applications in slow light, switching, and sensing. In this study, we present a THz EIT metasurface that utilizes a combination of circular and U-shaped ring resonators (CRR and USRR) based on bright-quasi-dark mode coupling. Different from the conventional methods that only focus on the modulation of the EIT transparent window, this work achieves active control with both the EIT window and the nearby resonance after integration with graphene, which extends more THz modulation channels.

With the rapid development of terahertz (THz) biosensing technology, the research on trace protein detection via THz metasurfaces has attracted significant attention. Here, we propose a graphene-integrated toroidal split-ring resonator (TSRR) THz meta-sensor for detecting protein at trace levels based on the Dirac property of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene. The experimental results show that the designed meta-sensor can realize the detection of midkine with a 125 pg/mL limit of detection (LOD).

The label-free detection and analysis of cancer cells using portable biosensing devices is crucial and promising. In this study, a novel reusable biosensing platform with a microfluidic-like based on terahertz plasmonic metasurfaces utilizing graphene integrated with an all-silicon groove for detecting liquid live cancer cells was developed. The proposed biosensor platform stands out because it can differentiate between the concentrations of three types of cancer cells by monitoring changes in resonance intensity and phase difference.

We theoretically describe and experimentally demonstrate a graphene-integrated metasurface structure that enables electrically-tunable directional control of thermal emission. This device consists of a dielectric spacer that acts as a Fabry-Perot resonator supporting long-range delocalized modes bounded on one side by an electrostatically tunable metal-graphene metasurface. By varying the Fermi level of the graphene, the accumulated phase of the Fabry-Perot mode is shifted, which changes the direction of absorption and emission at a fixed frequency.
