Article Abstract

We describe nine microvirus genomes identified in wastewater in Tempe, AZ, USA, between October 2019 and March 2020. The major capsid protein (MCP) encoded in these genomes phylogenetically cluster together and are distinct from the MCPs of microviruses identified in Mexico and Argentina.

For recovering whey soybean protein (WSP) from soybean whey wastewater (SWW) in food industry, a foam separation method for separating WSP by using temperature-responsive Janus sheets (MF-JNSs-PN) as foam stabilizer was established. MF-JNSs-PN was prepared by grafting the temperature-responsive polymer PNIPAM onto one side of the sheet inorganic material using BSA@Cu(PO)-MF as the template. MF-JNSs-PN has a good ability to stabilize the foam due to inducing the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity transition by adjusting the temperature.

Tailoring bidirectional electronic transfer interaction tunnels triggers sustainable and high activity of ozone catalysis for water purification.

Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation shows promise in destroying organic pollutants in water, yet developing catalysts with both high activity and stability remains challenging. In this study, we propose a catalyst design strategy involving the anchoring of electron-sharing sites near single-atom sites to construct bidirectional electron transfer interaction tunnels. The developed catalyst (MnN-Fe@FeN) features Fe@FeN atomic clusters as electron-sharing sites, coordinated Mn single-atom centers through shared nitrogen bridges, successfully establishing a synergistic system.

Although classical nitrification/denitrification is the common process for total-nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment, novel nitrogen-removal processes are being evaluated. Among them, nitrogen (N) removal in one aerobic stage has been promoted as heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HNAD). An alternate strategy for total-N removal in one aerobic stage is nitrogen assimilation for biomass synthesis.

In recent years, wood-based composites bonded with adhesives of conventional resins containing formaldehyde have raised concerns as corporations are becoming environmentally conscious and fossil fuels are in high demand. A new generation of adhesives are being developed from natural renewable biomass resources with considerable protein concentrations. In this study, wastewater treatment plant-activated sludge and biosolids are formulated into bio-adhesives via protein denaturation.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an emerging global threat that is expanding in many areas of the world. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is uniquely suited for use in areas of the world where clinical surveillance is limited or logistically slow to identify emerging threats, such as in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Wastewater was analyzed from three urban areas of Kampala, including a local HIV research clinic and two informal settlements.
