Article Abstract

Multi-functional nanoparticles are useful for various applications, such as biomedical imaging, detection, and display technologies. Colour-tunable GdEuTbO nanoparticles were synthesized with emission colour ranging from green (545 nm) to red (616 nm) by varying ( = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 1). These nanoparticles were surface-grafted with polyacrylic acid and a small quantity of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid. This modification aimed to ensure long-term colloidal stability (>1 year without precipitation) and high quantum yields (>30%) in aqueous media. Additionally, they exhibited long emission lifetimes (∼1 ms), high longitudinal water proton spin relaxivities (>30 smM), and high X-ray attenuation efficiencies (∼10 HU mM). These multiple exceptional properties within a single nanoparticle make them highly valuable for applications in biomedical imaging, noise-free signal detection, and colour display.

Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs), particularly platinum (Pt), are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis due to their exceptional activity. However, controlling their size and preventing sintering during synthesis remains a major challenge, especially when aiming for high dispersion and stability on supports such as graphene. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) has emerged as a promising method to address these issues, yet conventional processes often lead to broad particle size distributions (PSDs).

The -di(2-pyridyl)arenes, featuring a unique structure, hold significant promise for applications in fluorescent probes, synthetic nanoparticle stabilizers, and chemical synthesis. The mechanism of Ru-catalyzed decarboxylation and heteroarylation reactions of aryl carboxylic acids to access -dipyridylarenes was elucidated using DFT calculations, which involved C-H bond activation, oxidative addition, reductive elimination, and decarboxylation processes to form -di(2-pyridyl)arenes. The rate-determining step of the reaction is the second reductive elimination step with an energy barrier of 27.

The detection of biological nanoparticles (NPs), such as viruses and extracellular vesicles (EVs), plays a critical role in medical diagnostics. However, these particles are optically faint, making microscopic detection in complex solutions challenging. Recent advancements have demonstrated that distinguishing between metallic and dielectric signals with twilight off-axis holographic microscopy makes it possible to differentiate between metal and biological NPs and to quantify complexes formed from metal and biological NPs binding together.

In this work, we report a facile strategy for synthesizing hydrophilic Gd(OH) sheets via a Gd-based interfacial precipitation reaction at the interface of organosilane-modified GdO nanoparticles and a cation exchange resin. This strategy, independent of the specific organosilane used, produces two-dimensional sheets with a distinct lamellar structure and excellent aqueous dispersibility. Characterization confirms the formation of Gd(OH) sheets with promising fluorescent and magnetic properties.

This study demonstrates the successful fabrication of nanostructured Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films combining the conjugated copolymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene--3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PDOF--PEDOT) with spherical and triangular silver nanoparticles (AgNP). The LB technique allowed precise control over the molecular arrangement and distribution of the nanoparticles at the air-water interface, resulting in compact, reproducible and structurally ordered nanocomposite films. The structural and morphological properties of the interfacial monolayers and LB films were investigated using surface pressure-area isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) and quartz crystal microbalance.
