Article Abstract

B═O multiple bonds are fundamentally important owing to the unique property of B and its potential as a tool in catalysis. Herein by means of DFT calculations, we investigated the in situ generation of transient -B═O species in the nonmetallic inorganic boron oxides and demonstrated its superior ability to capture alkoxyl radicals under the conditions of oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP). Boron-containing materials are emerging as promising catalysts for ODHP, while an extensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms remains challenging. Through systematic mechanistic and characterization calculations, we show the feasibility for the presence of -B═O species under ODHP conditions and propose that its π nature dictates its inertness in the C-H activation of propane (Δ = 57 kcal/mol) but offers its strong ability in capturing alkoxyl radicals (barrierless with Δ = -30 kcal/mol), which can then transform to the ·CHOH radical. This explains the observation of enol in the experimental study. This specific behavior of the -B═O species makes it one of the key players in the complex reaction network of ODHP and also implicates the rational design of scavengers for reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other active oxygenated species.

To develop a simple and sensitive method for assessing the radical-scavenging activity of lipophilic antioxidants, the decay of the electron spin resonance (ESR) signal of 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine--oxyl radical (TEMPOL) was investigated as an indicator of radical reactions. The ESR signal of TEMPOL was decreased in ethanol, but not in acetonitrile, by the pyrolysis of 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile). Signal decay in ethanol was suppressed by degassing and did not occur in the presence of the spin trapping agent 5-(diethoxyphosphoryl)-5-methyl-1-pyrroline--oxide (DEPMPO).

Unveiling the neglected role of alcohols and phenolic compounds in photocatalysis HO generation chemistry.

Alcohols are promising sacrificial agents for improving the photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (HO) through reaction with holes, inhibiting the electron-hole recombination. However, the side effects of alcohols on oxygen reduction and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation remain controversial due to intrinsic formation of organic peroxides under irradiation in the presence of air or oxygen. To address this, we employ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to directly monitor intermediate species and eliminate false-positive results on HO production.

In chlorination disinfection treatment, residual iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICMs) are the precursors to iodinated disinfection by-products (I-DBPs). This study employed CoFeO nanoparticle catalytic peracetic acid oxidation (CoFeO/PAA) to remove iopamidol (IPM) and control I-DBP formation. The experimental results demonstrated that over 90% of the IPM degradation was achieved in 40 min.

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Nanchang University, 999 Xuefu Road, Nanchang, Jiangxi, 330031, China.

Here, a primary alkylative difunctionalization of olefins based on the decarboxylation of carboxylate ions to obtain alkyl radicals by electrochemical anodic oxidation is reported. The reaction employs quaternary ammonium carboxylates as the source of alkyl radicals and does not require additional oxidizing agents or electrolytes. The reaction exhibits a broad substrate range and functional group compatibility.
