Pollution is a major cause of ill health globally. Low emission zones (LEZ) have been identified as effective in reducing pollution and are increasing in popularity but remain divisive. Understanding what factors help or hinder implementation is important. In the UK, Clean Air Zones (CAZ, a type of LEZ) are being implemented in several cities. We aimed to identify key barriers and enablers to the implementation of a CAZ in real time, as policy was being developed and implemented in a large Northern city in England, UK. Twenty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted with city stakeholders and implementors approximately 6 months before a CAZ charging non-compliant taxis, buses, heavy goods vehicles and vans was launched. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data. Implementers were required to operate within a tight policy framework. Key enablers included: freedom to adapt the framework to local context, financial support, and cross-sector working. A focus on health was felt to be useful in justifying the policy to the public. Key barriers included conflict and opposition from local industry, politicians, and communities. Implementation of air quality policy which involves traffic restrictions remains controversial. The voices which 'shout the loudest' are often those with negative views, and these can create divisive discourse which shape public opinion and damage confidence of implementers. A systems perspective is needed to understand socio-political contexts which can influence implementation success. We provide recommendations to other areas considering implementing a LEZ.

Telerobotic surgery has undergone remarkable advances over the past two decades, driven by the integration of sophisticated robotic platforms and modern communication technologies, thereby alleviating many constraints of conventional surgical procedures. Building upon previous studies that focused on individual specialties or specific innovations, this review provides a comprehensive and integrated perspective by tracing the evolution of the field and highlighting applications in gastroenterology, urology, neurology, and cardiology. Landmark achievements include the 2001 transatlantic remote cholecystectomy and the introduction of next-generation platforms such as the Hinotori surgical robot, enabling low-latency remote interventions.

Hybrid artificial layer based on inorganic/polymer composite endows superior toughness and mechanical strength, which can achieve high stability of lithium metal anode. However, the large particle size and uneven distribution of inorganic fillers hinder the uniform flow of lithium ions across the membrane, making it difficult to achieve smooth lithium metal deposition/stripping. In this work, a chemical lithiation-induced defluorination strategy is proposed to engineer poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF)-based artificial layers, enabling in situ incorporation of highly dispersed LiF nanofiller within the polymer matrix and precise control over the LiF content.

Rationale: Clinical innovation-where physicians develop and use novel interventions that differ significantly from standard practice and that have not been shown to be sufficiently safe or effective for regular use in healthcare systems-has the potential to transform patient care and drive medical advancement. However, it is not without risk. It is important, therefore, that policymakers and healthcare institutions develop strategies to encourage responsible clinical innovation.

Membrane technology for gas separation is more efficient and energy-saving than thermally driven processes, including cryogenic distillation and adsorption. Metal-organic framework (MOF) and related glass membranes hold great potential for precise gas separation, but it remains challenging to construct ultrathin MOF glass membranes and optimize their transport pathways. In this study, a strategy based on vapor-linker deposition and melt-quenching is reported to design ultrathin zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) glass membranes with node-missing defect passageways.
