Article Abstract

Multiplex Immunohistochemistry (mIHC) is a cost-effective and accessible method for in situ labeling of multiple protein biomarkers in a tissue sample. By assigning a different stain to each biomarker, it allows the visualization of different types of cells within the tumor vicinity for downstream analysis. However, to detect different types of stains in a given mIHC image is a challenging problem, especially when the number of stains is high. Previous deep-learning-based methods mostly assume full supervision; yet the annotation can be costly. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised stain decomposition method to detect different stains simultaneously. Our method does not require any supervision, except for color samples of different stains. A main technical challenge is that the problem is underdetermined and can have multiple solutions. To conquer this issue, we propose a novel inversion regulation technique, which eliminates most undesirable solutions. On a 7-plexed IHC images dataset, the proposed method achieves high quality stain decomposition results without human annotation.

Solventless fed-batch experiments at elevated pressures were performed to gain insights into the performance of triethylamine as an extraction base during the direct hydrogenation of CO to formic acid. No formic acid was observed in the bulk liquid after several hours of reaction using an Au/TiO catalyst. Analysis on the spent catalyst revealed significant formic acid build-up within the catalyst pores.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is conventionally bonded to positively charged bar adsorbents through electrostatic interaction. This mode of bonding greatly hinders their use for removing toxic species from sea water and highly saline waste water matrices, where the high concentrations of NaCl solutions strongly affect their stability. In this respect, the success of covalent binding of SDS to the adsorbent surface via a facile procedure is expected to support its stability and maximize its application.

Enhancing the concentration of nitric oxide (NO) in tumor tissues via exogenous NO donors represents an efficient approach to augment the anti-tumor therapeutic effect of NO. Herein, a Golgi-targetable and photo-triggered NO donor, DYG-NO has been designed for the quantitative and localized NO release using an aminoquinoline derivative as the fluorescence reporter and Golgi-targetable group. The solution of DYG-NO was colorless and non-fluorescent due to the inhibition of intramolecular charge transfer state of the 7-aminoquolines between the imine group and trifluoromethyl group.

Estimating the postmortem interval (PMI) is crucial in medico-legal death investigations, but existing methods are highly influenced by environmental and physiological factors. This study proposes a novel biochemical strategy for PMI estimation using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI MS) to detect molecular changes in decomposing human soft tissues. Samples from the quadriceps and shoulder were collected from 13 human donors at the Research in Experimental and Social Thanatology (REST) facility in Quebec, Canada, spanning accumulated degree days (ADD) ranging from 9.

Lipid droplets are dynamic organelles involved in lipid metabolism and various metabolic disorders. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a novel amphiphilic polymer based on 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA). GA was chemically conjugated to polyethylene glycol (PEG) and further functionalized with a lipid droplet-targeting fluorescent probe D via an oxalate ester bond, then self-assembly yielding PGOD nanoplatform.
