The topic of sleep-related breathing disorders is always evolving, and during the European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress 2023 in Milan, Italy, the latest research and clinical topics in respiratory medicine were presented. The most interesting issues included new diagnostic tools, such as cardiovascular parameters and artificial intelligence, pathophysiological traits of sleep disordered breathing from routine polysomnography or polygraphy signals, and new biomarkers and the diagnostic approach in patients with excessive daytime sleepiness. This article summarises the most relevant studies and topics presented at the ERS International Congress 2023. Each section has been written by early career members of ERS Assembly 4.

Dramatic drop in reproductive hormone, especially estrogen level, from pregnancy to postpartum period is known to contribute to postpartum depression (PPD), but the underlying mechanism and the role of the estrogen receptors (ERs) in this process were unclear. Here, we used an estrogen-withdrawal-induced PPD model following hormone simulated pregnancy (HSP) in female Sprague-Dawley rats to induce depressive-like behaviors. After estrogen withdrawal, we observe an up-regulation of astrocyte-specific potassium channel (Kir4.

Background: Adherence to prescribed inhaler use is critical for effective asthma management and to prevent exacerbations. However, overall adherence to inhaler use among asthma patients is low and the most frequent measures of adherence are considered not sufficiently reliable. The aim of this study was to investigate adherence rates and their impact on asthma management via an electronic monitoring system.

Background: Spirometry is one of the basic methods used in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of respiratory disease. Spirometric test results that do not comply with international standards may be misinterpreted and lead to misdiagnosis and treatment. We aimed to assess the tests of patients that meet the "American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society (ATS/ERS) 2019" recommendations, to identify the most common errors, and to explore patient characteristics possibly associated with failure to reach these standards.
