Herein, a fluorometric and colorimetric dual-mode assay platform used for α-glucosidase (α-Glu) activity sensing based on aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) of AuNCs was developed for the first time. The quantum yield (QY) and fluorescence lifetime of AuNCs were successfully ameliorated by Ce-triggered AIEE (Ce@AuNCs). Subsequently, on the basis of the inner filter effect (IFE) and dynamic quenching effect (DQE) between 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol (DCIP) and Ce@AuNCs as well as the reduction of DCIP by ascorbic acid (AA) generated from α-Glu-catalyzed hydrolysis of L-ascorbic acid-2-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl (AA2G), the marriage of fluorometric and colorimetric modes applied for α-Glu activity monitoring was achieved. Besides, the feasibility of this dual-mode sensing system was confirmed by the assays potential interfering substances and in real samples. In particular, this system was further applied to evaluate natural α-Glu inhibitors (AGIs) including luteolin, apigenin, and hesperidin. Overall, the multi-mode optical sensor newly designed here has the potential for the accurate discovery of natural anti-diabetes drugs and the therapy of diabetes.

A nanozyme-mediated cascade reaction system for fluorometric and colorimetric dual-mode detection of sarcosine (SA) was developed. The nanozymes (Zn-Glu@Hemin) were synthesized via a rapid self-assembly within 10 min at room temperature. Importantly, the Zn-Glu@Hemin exhibited strong peroxidase (POD)-mimicking activity, catalyzing the generation of hydroxyl radical (·OH) and superoxide anion (O) from hydrogen peroxide (HO), enhancing the fluorescence reaction of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and the colorimetric reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB).

A dual-mode aptasensor was engineered for aflatoxin B (AFB) detection by functional integration of peroxidase-mimetic Au@CeO core-shell nanostructures with emissive carbon dots (CDs). The Au@CeO nanocomposite, synthesized via spontaneous redox reaction, exhibited enhanced peroxidase-like activity due to abundant Ce/oxygen vacancies facilitating hydroxyl radical generation. The aptasensor utilizes a competitive binding mechanism, where AFB competed with immobilized Au@CeO-CDs-Apt1 probes for binding sites, resulting in inversely proportional colorimetric and fluorescent signals.

Residues of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) raise considerable concern, while achieving high enough detection sensitivity is still a challenge for on-site fluorescence techniques. Herein, we report a "double-end samplification" strategy by encapsulating a low-emission fluorescent ion probe [DCF][P] into a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) hydrophobic core to form ionic luminescent micelles. At the probe end, ionic liquid micelles locally concentrated the probes, achieving a 350-fold fluorescence enhancement.

Herein we describe a quinoxaline mono Schiff base, synthesised from benzil and o-phenylene diamine that may be used as a fluorescent-colourimetric chemosensor to detect Ag ions in organic media with high selectivity and sensitivity over other competitive ions. The sensing processes were operated by visual change, absorption, and emission measurements, and the binding sites were confirmed by FTIR and single-crystal structure of the Ag(I)- complex. From Job-plot analysis, ESI-mass spectra and XRD studies 1:2 binding stoichiometry between host-guest was observed.

A simple and robust colorimetric and fluorescent eugenol-based chemical sensor, namely, (E)-N'-(5-allyl-2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (EABH) was synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic techniques such as, NMR (H and C) and mass spectra. The chemosensor shows dual behavior for the colorimetric detection of Fe and fluorometric detection of Pb ions with high sensitivity and selectivity towards both the ions. The EABH detects Fe by "naked eye" color change from lime yellow to brown and displayed fluorescence "Turn-off" response to Pb ion.
