Article Abstract

Parabens, a group of alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, have been found in aquatic systems in particular, leading to concerns about their potential impact on ecosystems. This study investigated the effects of three commonly used parabens, methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), and propylparaben (PrP), on the brackish water flea Diaphanosoma celebensis. The results showed that PrP had the most adverse impact on survival rates, followed by EtP and MeP, while MeP and EtP induced significant adverse effects on reproductive performance. A transcriptome analysis revealed significant differential gene expression patterns in response to paraben exposure, with MeP associated with the most significant effects. MeP and EtP exposure produced greater disruption in the microbiota of D. celebensis than did PrP compared with control groups, and we identified eight key microbiota, including Ruegeria and Roseovarius. Correlation analysis between transcriptome and microbiome data revealed key interactions between specific microbiota and host gene expression. Certain microbial taxa were associated with specific genes (e.g. cuticle related genes) and toxicological pathways, shedding light on the complex molecular response and in vivo toxicity effects of parabens. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying paraben toxicity and highlight the importance of considering the ecological impact of chemical contaminants in aquatic ecosystems.

Parabens (PBs), extensively used as preservatives in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, are increasingly detected across diverse environmental matrices. Nevertheless, their presence and potential impacts on marine apex predators remain poorly understood. Here, hepatic tissues from 87 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins collected from the northern South China Sea (NSCS) during 2004-2021 were analyzed for four PBs and five paraben metabolites (m-PBs) to investigate their bioaccumulation characters and potential health risks.

: Dermatitis is frequently treated with dexamethasone cutaneous application, which causes adverse effects mainly when it is chronically administered. Sesamol is a phytochemical compound known for its anti-inflammatory activity and low toxicity. Therefore, this study reports the optimization of a guar gum hydrogel with enhanced physicochemical and microbiological stability, providing an effective dosage form for topical application of sesamol nanocapsules to treat irritant contact dermatitis.

Parabens (PBs) are alkyl esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid and are widely used in pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, and cosmetics due to their antimicrobial properties. Parabens are also known as "Endocrine disruptors" and can cause toxicity in different organisms. Parabens, especially methylparaben and propylparaben are also present in many environmental matrices, such as water sources and soil, and can cause cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in different organisms.

Exposure to multiple endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may have some adverse impacts on child health; yet, little data is available on the body burdens, co-exposure patterns, health risks, and possible sources of a broad range of EDCs in school-age children. A total of 33 chemicals including 3 non-specific pyrethroid pesticide metabolites, 2 specific organophosphorus pesticide metabolites, 5 chlorophenols, 4 phenols, 5 parabens and 14 toxic and essential elements were quantified in urine. A 24-hour dietary recall survey was conducted to collect dietary information, and seven food categories were classified accordingly.

A Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC) method was developed and validated to simultaneously quantify six contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the context of microalgae bioremediation. RP-HPLC was chosen for its ability to separate substances of differing polarities, its use of cost-effective and low-toxicity mobile phases, and the capacity to selectively adjust pH for enhanced sample resolution. To validate this method, standard guidelines were followed to evaluate system suitability, linearity, accuracy, precision, recovery, limits of detection and quantification, selectivity and specificity.
