Peroxymonosulfate-mediated advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) degrading organic pollutants (Tetracycline (TC) as an example) in water with singlet oxygen (O) as the main reactive oxygen has received more and more attention. However, the generation mechanism of O is still unclear. Consequently, this study investigates the O formation mechanism during the activated PMS process using a nitrogen-copper-loaded carbon-based material (Cu/CuO/CuO@N-C), synthesized by thermally decomposing organobase-modified HKUST-1 via a one-pot method. It was discovered that incorporating an organobase (Benzylamine) into the metal organic framework (MOF) precursor directs the MOF's self-assembly process and supplements its nitrogen content. This modification modulates the Nx-Cu-Oy active site formation in the material, selectively producing O. Additionally, O was identified as the dominant reactive oxygen species in the Cu/CuO/CuO@N-C-PMS system, contributing to TC degradation with a rate of 70.82%. The TC degradation efficiency remained high in the pH range of 3-11 and sustained its efficacy after five consecutive uses. Finally, based on the intermediates of TC degradation, three possible degradation pathways were postulated, and a reduction in the ecotoxicity of the degradation products was predicted. This work presents a novel and general strategy for constructing nitrogen-copper-loaded carbon-based materials for use in PMS-AOPs.

A multi-indicator framework was developed to resolve multi-source pollution in highly urbanized rivers, demonstrated in the Qinhuai River Basin, Nanjing, China. Water quality index (WQI) stratification was integrated with dissolved organic matter (DOM) fluorescence components, hydrochemical ions, and conventional parameters and analyzed using positive matrix factorization (PMF). Correlation analysis further elucidated source compositions and interactions.

The rapid development of industry and agriculture has led to a significant increase in the toxicity and pollution of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in soil. Consequently, soil remediation employing biochar or modified biochar has emerged as a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable approach to address the issue of heavy metal (HM) ion pollution. PEI-functionalization biochar (PBC) derived from corn straw (PBCC), wood straw (PBCW), and rice straw (PBCR) was synthesized to immobilize Cd and Pb in contaminated acidic yellow soil.

The potential of PM to cause lung cancer has been well established; however, evidence regarding which specific components are responsible remains limited. We investigated dissolved organic matter (DOM) in PM using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and cellular DNA damage assays to elucidate molecular composition and sources of carcinogenic components. Our analysis revealed hundreds of genotoxic compounds, with condensed aromatic amines predominating in number, abundance, and contribution to overall genotoxicity.

To balance the "detection sensitivity" and "device stability" of the organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) aptasensors, it has become an urgent challenge for achieving effective signal modulation under low ascorbic acid (AA) conditions. To address this, our work proposed a collaborative optimization strategy by coupling heterojunction engineering with interfacial molecular modulation, to endow a high current gain of OPECT with low-AA -dependence. First, a CdZnS-SnInS heterojunction gate was constructed by in situ growth of CdZnS quantum dots (QDs) on SnInS nanoflowers, which enhanced the light trapping ability and photoelectric conversion efficiency of the photoactive gate.

Humans are exposed to mixtures of chemical pollutants from various environmental sources at all stages of life. Understanding how these compounds are causally linked to population health effects is challenging because of the ethical limitations on studying controlled human exposures and the complexity of the many potential molecular mechanisms involved. We hypothesized that studies using a combination of in vivo murine stress reporter models together with non-targeted global transcriptome analysis will define the toxic mechanisms of complex chemical mixtures in a physiological context.
