Article Abstract

The excretory organs of insects offer potential physiological targets for insect control. In this study, RNA-seq was utilized to identify a set of transporter and receptor genes enriched in the excretory organs of the brown planthopper (BPH), , which is considered the most important phloem-feeding insect pest in rice. A total of 1565 and 1084 transcripts were upregulated in the excretory organs, Malpighian tubules, and hindgut, respectively, compared to the midgut, which was enriched for transport activity and oxidoreductase activity. Eight potentially important genes were selected for the exploration of biological function, including one sodium/potassium-ATPase (NKA) subunit (), five aquaporins (AQPs), and two neuropeptide receptors. RNA interference (RNAi) assays showed that the knockdown of and two AQP genes in BPH resulted in significant lethal phenotypes (corrected mortalities = 42.9-63.6%, 7 days after injection) and significantly reduced honeydew amounts. Our findings suggest that several genes enriched in excretory organs were important for BPH survival, which could be new insect control targets.

Introduction: Parasitic nematodes are prevalent in fish populations. The parasites are pathogenic but depress host responses, which limit clearance of the pathogens from the invasion sites. We hypothesized that one of several control strategies, which could augment protection, is immunization of the fish host with parasite antigens prior to live pathogen exposure.

The increasing global prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA), particularly among younger populations, underscores the urgent need for safe and effective dietary interventions. fungi, long utilized in East Asian food culture, ferment rice to produce red yeast rice (RYR), a functional food rich in monacolin K and Monascus pigments. Among these, yellow pigments (MYPs)-natural azaphilone compounds used as food additives and colorants-have shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic regulatory activities.

The reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal-based toxicological studies is becoming an essential requirement at academic, industrial, and governmental levels, turning new approach methodologies (NAMs) from alternatives into necessities. New strategies for hazard characterization and exposure assessment have been developed in this wake, including among others, sophisticated organ-on-chip platforms, or holistic human biomonitoring programs. This review summarizes state-of-the-art methods of NAMs for hazard characterization and advances in exposure assessment in the context of toxicants occurring in human urine.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are versatile tools in various applications, particularly in the biomedical fields. To understand their behavior within biological systems, it is crucial to measure their distributions , especially as they interact with the immune system and excretory organs, to ensure their efficacy, safety, and clearance. Here, we demonstrate the unique capabilities of laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) imaging for revealing the temporal redistribution of gold NPs (AuNPs) in key excretory organs.
