Skeletal muscle atrophy and weakness are major contributors to morbidity, prolonged recovery, and long-term disability across a wide range of diseases. Atrophy is caused by breakdown of sarcomeric proteins resulting in loss of muscle mass and strength. Molecular mechanism underlying the onset of muscle atrophy and its progression have been analysed in patients, mice, and cell culture but the complementarity of these model systems remains to be explored.

Background: Bedside ultrasound is increasingly utilized to assess muscle mass in critically ill patients, providing a noninvasive and real-time tool for early risk stratification. Muscle wasting is known to be associated with adverse outcomes in septic shock, but its prognostic value using ultrasound in this population remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association between changes in rectus femoris cross-sectional area (CSA), assessed by bedside ultrasound, and 28-day mortality in patients with septic shock.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by cognitive decline and behavioral impairments, typically manifesting in the elderly and presenile population. With the rapid global aging trend, early diagnosis and treatment of AD have become increasingly urgent research priorities. The primary pathological features of AD include excessive accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques, the formation of neurofibrillary tangles, and neuronal loss.

Mutations in the human ADAR gene encoding adenosine deaminase acting on RNA 1 (ADAR1) cause Aicardi-Goutières syndrome 6 (AGS6); a severe auto-inflammatory encephalopathy with aberrant interferon (IFN) induction. AdarΔ2-13 null mutant mouse embryos lacking ADAR1 protein die with high levels of IFN-stimulated gene (ISG) transcripts. In Adar Mavs double mutants also lacking the Mitochondrial antiviral signaling (MAVS) adaptor, the aberrant IFN induction is prevented.

Background And Objectives: Microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS) is commonly conducted under a microscope. We report a large series of fully endoscopic MVDs for HFS and describe our initial experience with 3-dimensional (3D) endoscopy.
Methods: Clinical data of 204 patients with HFS who underwent fully endoscopic MVD using 2-dimensional (2D) and 3D endoscopy (191 and 13 patients, respectively) from July 2017 to October 2024 were retrospectively analyzed.
