The structures, strain fields, and defect distributions in solid materials underlie the mechanical and physical properties across numerous applications. Many modern microstructural microscopy tools characterize crystal grains, domains and defects required to map lattice distortions or deformation, but are limited to studies of the (near) surface. Generally speaking, such tools cannot probe the structural dynamics in a way that is representative of bulk behavior. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction based imaging has long mapped the deeply embedded structural elements, and with enhanced resolution, dark field X-ray microscopy (DFXM) can now map those features with the requisite nm-resolution. However, these techniques still suffer from the required integration times due to limitations from the source and optics. This work extends DFXM to X-ray free electron lasers, showing how the [Formula: see text] photons per pulse available at these sources offer structural characterization down to 100 fs resolution (orders of magnitude faster than current synchrotron images). We introduce the XFEL DFXM setup with simultaneous bright field microscopy to probe density changes within the same volume. This work presents a comprehensive guide to the multi-modal ultrafast high-resolution X-ray microscope that we constructed and tested at two XFELs, and shows initial data demonstrating two timing strategies to study associated reversible or irreversible lattice dynamics.

Poly(γ-stearyl-l-glutamate) (PSLG) is a semiflexible synthetic polypeptide that forms both thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystal (LC) phases. We previously showed that spherical nanoparticles (NPs) decorated with another semiflexible helical polymer, poly(hexyl isocyanate), form lyotropic nematic rather than cubic LC phases. In this work, PSLG ligands for functionalizing 4 nm ZrO NPs were prepared via N-carboxyanhydride ring-opening polymerization.

ObjectiveTo determine the effectiveness of bilateral decompression combined with a unilateral transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion approach in centralizing a lordotic cage and preventing contralateral radiculopathy by ensuring equal foraminal elevation.MethodsThis is a retrospective cohort study based on clinical records and radiological data. Eighty-seven patients diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis at L3-S1 levels underwent bilateral decompression and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion between 2017 and 2022.

In this study, a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method was used to synthesize a novel gold-yttrium trimesic acid metal-organic framework (Au-Y-TMA MOF), demonstrating significant improvements over conventional single-metal MOFs, that is, yttrium trimesic acid (Y-TMA), in both supercapacitor applications and electrochemical antibiotic detection. The X-ray diffraction patterns of Au-Y-TMA confirmed the presence and impact of Au in the Y-TMA matrix, while field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images revealed a heterogeneous combination of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and Y-TMA, suggesting a nonuniform distribution and possible interaction. The developed half-cell supercapacitor exhibited a remarkable capacitance value of 1836 F/g at a current density of 5 A/g by galvanostatic charging-discharging (GCD) measurement.

Thin films of CuSn Gd S were prepared on soda-lime glass substrates using spin coating in a sulfur-rich environment. We investigated how doping CuSnS with gadolinium (Gd) affected its structural, morphological, and optical properties using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. XRD showed that all samples had a polycrystalline monoclinic structure, while FE-SEM revealed a mix of spherical and polygon-shaped grains.

Herein, it is reported the synthesis of a niobium-based metal-organic framework (MOF), [Nb-(Bez-(COO))] , for the extraction of caffeine from surface waters. The material was synthesized and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, which confirmed the coordination between the ligand (1,4-benzenodicarboxylic, (Bez-(COO))) and niobium (Nb) with a morphology composed of hexagonal rods, high crystallinity, and a surface area of 94.7 m g.
