Introduction/background: The seed size of wax gourds is an important agronomic trait; however, the associated genes have not yet been reported.
Methods: In this study, we used a high-density genetic map constructed based on F recombinant inbred line populations derived from a cross between MY-1 (large seed) and GX-71 (small seed) strains to detect quantitative trait locis (QTLs) for seed-size-related traits in wax gourd over a two-year period.
Results: Two stable QTLs ( and ) for seed length (SL) and seed width (SW) on chromosome 10 were repeatedly detected over two years (2021-2022). had a phenotypic variation rate of 75.30% and 80.80% in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Whereas, had a phenotypic variation rate of 66.60% and 73.80% in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Further, a single nucleotide polymorphism mutation was found to cause early termination of () translation in GX-71 through sequencing analysis of candidate genes. Based on gene functional annotation and quantitative real-time PCR analyses, encoded a probable N-acetyltransferase HLS1-like protein and its expression level was significantly different between parents. Therefore, is a major candidate gene associated with a one-factor polymorphism regulating the SL and SW of wax gourds. Finally, based on variation in the sequence, a cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence marker was developed for the molecular marker-assisted breeding of wax gourds.
Discussion: Overall, this study is of great significance for the genetic improvement of seed size, verification of gene functions, and cultivation of specific germplasm resources for wax gourds.

The red-fronted brown lemur (Eulemur rufifrons) is an important species to the function of Madagascar's ecosystems, contributing to critical ecological processes such as seed dispersal. Given its ecological, as well as cultural, importance, genomic resources for E. rufifrons are valuable for understanding evolutionary history and informing conservation strategies.

Ongoing declines of large-bodied frugivores limit the dispersal of large-seeded plants, contributing to their (local) demise and 'downsizing' of seeds across assemblages. However, the extent to which human pressure leads to contemporary seed downsizing, and whether extinct megafrugivores have left imprints on seed size, remains unclear. Here, we integrate trait and distribution data for 2852 endozoochorous plant species, 48 extant and 15 extinct frugivore species across 361 assemblages on Madagascar.

The size of microbial sequence databases continues to grow beyond the abilities of existing alignment tools. We introduce LexicMap, a nucleotide sequence alignment tool for efficiently querying moderate-length sequences (>250 bp) such as a gene, plasmid or long read against up to millions of prokaryotic genomes. We construct a small set of probe k-mers, which are selected to efficiently sample the entire database to be indexed such that every 250-bp window of each database genome contains multiple seed k-mers, each with a shared prefix with one of the probes.

Grain size substantially influences rice quality and yield. In this study, we identified (), a quantitative trait locus encoding an F-box protein that enhances grain length by promoting cell proliferation. The transcription factor OsbZIP35 represses expression, while COR1 interacts with OsTCP19, leading to its degradation.

The size and composition of local species pools are, in part, determined by past dispersal events. Predicting how communities respond to future disturbances, such as fluctuating environmental conditions, requires knowledge of such histories. We assessed the influence of a historical dispersal event on community assembly by simulating various scales of dispersal for 240 serpentine annual plant communities that experienced a large shift from drought to high rainfall conditions over three years.
