Article Abstract

The susceptibility of reinforced concrete (RC) slabs to punching shear failure is heightened when subjected to close-in explosion loads, leading to a wider range of damage caused by the resultant leakage shock wave through the punching hole. Consequently, it is crucial to analyze the conditions for punching shear failure and the size of the punching hole in RC slabs. This study investigates the punching shear failure of RC slabs under close-in explosions through numerical simulation and theoretical analysis. Initially, a finite element model is developed to examine the distribution of the explosion load on the slab's surface. Subsequently, the critical explosion load for punching shear failure is determined using a damage criterion specific to RC slabs. Additionally, a calculation model based on the twin shear stress yield criterion is established to predict the punching hole's radius. To validate the accuracy of this method, a comparison is conducted with existing test results.

Clinch-Bonding Process for Ultra-High-Strength Steel and A5052 Aluminum Alloy Sheets.

Materials (Basel)

July 2025

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Toyohashi University of Technology, 1-1 Hibarigaoka, Tempaku, Toyohashi 441-8580, Japan.

Initially, the effects of sheet combinations for joining two sheets, including 780 MPa steel and A5052 aluminum alloy sheets, on the joined cross-sectional shapes of the sheets in a clinch-bonding process and the tension-shear load of joined sheets were investigated. The effect of an adhesive on the amounts of the interlock and the minimum thickness in the upper sheet was not large, whereas the effect of the sheet combination was observed. Subsequently, for joining the upper 980 MPa ultra-high-strength steel and lower aluminum alloy sheets in the clinch-bonding process, the effects of the die shape, punch velocity, and sheet holding force on the joinability were investigated.

Flat slab structures are extensively utilized in modern construction owing to their efficient load transfer mechanisms and optimized space utilization. Nevertheless, the persistent issue of brittle punching shear failure at connection zones continues to pose significant engineering challenges. This study proposes an innovative cross-shaped steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) column-slab connection.

Reinforced concrete flat slab-column structures, lacking the redundancy provided by a beam-column system, are susceptible to punching shear failure under extreme loading conditions, which may lead to progressive collapse with catastrophic consequences. A systematic review of recent advancements in the progressive collapse resistance of flat slab-column systems has been provided, categorizing the methodologies into experimental investigation, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation. Experimental studies primarily utilize the Alternative Load Path methodology, incorporating both quasi-static and dynamic loading protocols to assess structural performance.

In Situ Punch-Shear Testing of Polymers.

Polymers (Basel)

April 2025

Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Alberta, 9211-116 St, Edmonton, AB T6G 1H9, Canada.

Conventional material aging and testing protocols involve exposing coupon samples to saturation in application fluid(s) at temperature and pressure conditions typically encountered during service, followed by mechanical testing at ambient conditions. This practice can generate misleading results for materials for which fluid ingress is rapidly reversible, most notably at elevated temperatures. A recently developed in situ punch-shear device has been successfully used to establish experimental correlations between the tensile properties (ASTM D638) and shear properties (ASTM D732) of Polyethylene of Raised Temperature (PERT) under dry conditions.

Finite Element Numerical Simulation of Deformation of Critical Vehicle Components and Damage to Retaining Walls of Emergency Escape Ramps During Truck Impacts.

Sensors (Basel)

February 2025

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Manufacturing System & Advanced Manufacturing Technology, School of Mechanical Engineering, Guangxi University, Nanning 530004, China.

In this study, finite element numerical simulations were used to investigate the deformation of critical vehicle components and the damage characteristics of the retaining wall at the end of the emergency escape ramp after the impact of a Ford 800 truck on the retaining wall of the refuge lane. A finite element model of the reinforced concrete retaining wall of the truck was created using the LS-DYNA (R11.0) program and the correctness of the constructed finite element model was confirmed by tests.
