Article Abstract

The US FDA convened a virtual public workshop with the goals of obtaining feedback on the terminology needed for effective communication of multicomponent biomarkers and discussing the diverse use of biomarkers observed across the FDA and identifying common issues. The workshop included keynote and background presentations addressing the stated goals, followed by a series of case studies highlighting FDA-wide and external experience regarding the use of multicomponent biomarkers, which provided context for panel discussions focused on common themes, challenges and preferred terminology. The final panel discussion integrated the main concepts from the keynote, background presentations and case studies, laying a preliminary foundation to build consensus around the use and terminology of multicomponent biomarkers.

Sepsis as a complex syndrome: Are combined biomarkers the future of diagnosis and prognosis? Clinical perspective.

Immunol Lett

August 2025

Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care, Department of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL, USA. Electronic address:

Sepsis remains a major cause of mortality worldwide, driven by a dysregulated host response to infection that leads to life-threatening organ dysfunction. Despite advances in evidence-based medicine, early diagnosis and risk stratification remain significant challenges due to the complex, multifaceted nature of sepsis and substantial interindividual variability in clinical presentation. Current approaches relying on single biomarkers cannot provide comprehensive insights into disease progression, limiting their clinical utility in guiding timely and effective interventions.

The identification and quantification of antioxidant species are of paramount importance, as these compounds play vital roles in regulating redox balance, cellular signaling, immune responses, and their abnormal levels serve as crucial markers in the onset the progression of various diseases. Traditional single-analyte detection methods often suffer from limited specificity and are incapable of capturing the complexity of biological systems involving multiple coexisting antioxidants. In contrast, colorimetric sensor arrays offer a powerful alternative by generating unique, fingerprint-like response patterns that enable the simultaneous detection and differentiation of structurally or functionally similar analytes.

Tendinitis repair remains challenging due to the limited self-renewal capacity of tenocytes and persistent inflammatory microenvironment. Conventional therapies remain limited by systemic drug toxicity and fail to coordinate immunomodulation with matrix remodeling. Plant-derived extracellular vesicles have demonstrated tissue repair potential owing to their unique bioactive components and exceptional cross-species compatibility.
