Advanced sequencing technologies have expedited resolution of higher-level arthropod relationships. Yet, dark branches persist, principally among groups occurring in cryptic habitats. Among chelicerates, Solifugae ("camel spiders") is the last order lacking a higher-level phylogeny and have thus been historically characterized as "neglected [arachnid] cousins". Though renowned for aggression, remarkable running speed, and xeric adaptation, inferring solifuge relationships has been hindered by inaccessibility of diagnostic morphological characters, whereas molecular investigations have been limited to one of 12 recognized families. Our phylogenomic dataset via capture of ultraconserved elements sampling all extant families recovered a well-resolved phylogeny, with two distinct groups of New World taxa nested within a broader Paleotropical radiation. Divergence times using fossil calibrations inferred that Solifugae radiated by the Permian, and most families diverged prior to the Paleogene-Cretaceous extinction, likely driven by continental breakup. We establish Boreosolifugae uniting five Laurasian families, and Australosolifugae uniting seven Gondwanan families using morphological and biogeographic signal.

Guided image super-resolution (GISR) aims to reconstruct a high-resolution (HR) target image from its low-resolution (LR) counterpart with the guidance of a HR image from another modality. Existing learning-based methods typically employ symmetric two-stream networks to extract features from both the guidance and target images, and then fuse these features at either an early or late stage through manually designed modules to facilitate joint inference. Despite significant performance, these methods still face several issues: i) the symmetric architectures treat images from different modalities equally, which may overlook the inherent differences between them; ii) lower-level features contain detailed information while higher-level features capture semantic structures.

As climate change continues, the likelihood of passing critical thresholds or tipping points increases. Hence, there is a need to advance the science for detecting such thresholds. In this paper, we assess the needs and opportunities for Earth Observation (EO, here understood to refer to satellite observations) to inform society in responding to the risks associated with ten potential large-scale ocean tipping elements: Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation; Atlantic Subpolar Gyre; Beaufort Gyre; Arctic halocline; Kuroshio Large Meander; deoxygenation; phytoplankton; zooplankton; higher level ecosystems (including fisheries); and marine biodiversity.

Eumelanins are a family of biomolecules with a wide range of functionality in nature and tremendous potential for commercial and industrial applications, provided that they can be produced in large quantities. Our group has developed a method to biosynthesize eumelanin with high yield using the marine bacterium Vibrio natriegens. In this work, we use high-resolution H, C, and N magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to characterize the purity of the extracted solid eumelanin as a function of the quality control methods.
