Artificial intelligence applied to medical image analysis has been extensively used to develop non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic signatures. However, these imaging biomarkers should be largely validated on multi-center datasets to prove their robustness before they can be introduced into clinical practice. The main challenge is represented by the great and unavoidable image variability which is usually addressed using different pre-processing techniques including spatial, intensity and feature normalization. The purpose of this study is to systematically summarize normalization methods and to evaluate their correlation with the radiomics model performances through meta-analyses. This review is carried out according to the PRISMA statement: 4777 papers were collected, but only 74 were included. Two meta-analyses were carried out according to two clinical aims: characterization and prediction of response. Findings of this review demonstrated that there are some commonly used normalization approaches, but not a commonly agreed pipeline that can allow to improve performance and to bridge the gap between bench and bedside.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a category of cancer cells endowed with the ability to renew themselves, undergo unregulated growth, and exhibit a differentiation capacity akin to that of normal stem cells. CSCs have been linked with tumor metastasis and cancer recurrence due to their ability to elude immune monitoring. As a result, targeting CSCs specifically may improve the efficacy of cancer therapy.

3D shape defect detection plays an important role in autonomous industrial inspection. However, accurate detection of anomalies remains challenging due to the complexity of multimodal sensor data, especially when both color and structural information are required. In this work, we propose a lightweight inter-modality feature prediction framework that effectively utilizes multimodal fused features from the inputs of RGB, depth and point clouds for efficient 3D shape defect detection.

Background: Unsupervised cognitive assessments are becoming commonly used in studies of aging and neurodegenerative diseases. As assessments are completed in everyday environments and without a proctor, there are concerns about how common distractions may impact performance and whether these distractions may differentially impact those experiencing the earliest symptoms of dementia.
