The prompt presumptive identification of methicillin-resistant (MRSA) using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) can aid in early clinical management and infection control during routine bacterial identification procedures. This study applied a machine learning approach to MALDI-TOF peaks for the presumptive identification of MRSA and compared the accuracy according to staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC) types. We analyzed 194 clinical isolates to evaluate the machine learning-based identification system (AMRQuest software, v.2.1, ASTA: Suwon, Korea), which was constructed with 359 clinical isolates for the learning dataset. This system showed a sensitivity of 91.8%, specificity of 83.3%, and accuracy of 87.6% in distinguishing MRSA. For SCC II and IVA types, common MRSA types in a hospital context, the accuracy was 95.4% and 96.1%, respectively, while for the SCC IV type, it was 21.4%. The accuracy was 90.9% for methicillin-susceptible . This presumptive MRSA identification system may be helpful for the management of patients before the performance of routine antimicrobial resistance testing. Further optimization of the machine learning model with more datasets could help achieve rapid identification of MRSA with less effort in routine clinical procedures using MALDI-TOF MS as an identification method.

Hybrid breeding based on male sterility requires the removal of male parents, which is time- and labor-intensive; however, the use of female sterile male parent can solve this problem. In the offspring of distant hybridization between Brassica oleracea and Brassica napus, we obtained a mutant, 5GH12-279, which not only fails to generate gynoecium (thereby causing female sterility) but also has serrated leaves that could be used as a phenotypic marker in seedling screening. Genetic analysis revealed that this trait was controlled by a single dominant gene.

RNA-protein interactions critically regulate gene expression and cellular processes, yet their comprehensive mapping remains challenging due to their structural diversity. We introduce PRIM-seq (protein-RNA interaction mapping by sequencing), a method for concurrent de novo identification of RNA-binding proteins and their associated RNAs. PRIM-seq generates unique chimeric DNA sequences by proximity ligation of RNAs with protein-linked DNA barcodes, which are subsequently decoded through sequencing.

Marine vessels play a vital role in the global economy; however, their negative impact on the marine atmospheric environment is a growing concern. Quantifying marine vessel emissions is an essential prerequisite for controlling these emissions and improving the marine atmospheric environment. Optical imaging remote sensing is a vital technique for quantifying marine vessel emissions.

Severe pneumonia, as a critical and prevalent condition of the respiratory system, poses a significant threat to patient survival and health outcomes. This article focuses on the similarities and differences between community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP)/ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). There is significant divergence in the predominant pathogens between severe community-acquired pneumonia (SCAP) and HAP/VAP.
