A simple, eco-friendly, and low-cost electrochemical approach has been applied to the synthesis of carbon dots (C dots) from histidine hydrochloride in the absence or presence of halides (Cl, Br, and I) at various potentials up to 10 V. The as-formed C dots refer to C dots, Cl-C, Br-C, and I-C dots. The time-evolution UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra provide more detailed information about the formation of C dots. Upon increasing the reaction time from 1 to 120 min, more and more C dots are formed, leading to increased PL intensity. The halides play two important roles in determining the formation of C dots; controlling the reaction rate and surface states. When compared to chloride and bromide, iodide has a greater effect on varying surface states and inducing PL quenching through intersystem crossing. The PL intensities of the four types of C dots all decrease upon increasing Cu, Hg, and Ag concentrations. In the presence of 0.8 mM I, I-C dots compared to C dots, Cl-C dots, and Br-C dots are slightly better for quantitation of Cu. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results of I-C dots reveal the interactions of Cu with the surface ligands (imidazole and histidine). The I-C dot probe in the presence of 0.8 mM I is selective toward Cu over the tested metal ions such as Hg and Ag. The assay provides a limit of detection of 0.22 μM for Cu at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Practicality of this probe has been validated by the analyses of tap, lake, and sea water samples, with negligible matrix effects.

Iron-cerium co-doped carbon dots (Fe,Ce-CDs) were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method using tartaric acid and L-tryptophan as ligands. Fe,Ce-CDs shows excellent peroxidase-like (POD) activity and nitrite (NO) can promote the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to its blue oxidation product (oxTMB) due to the formation of ∙NO free radical. NO further react with oxTMB to form a yellow color via diazotization resulting in the absorbance Change at 450 nm.

To balance the "detection sensitivity" and "device stability" of the organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) aptasensors, it has become an urgent challenge for achieving effective signal modulation under low ascorbic acid (AA) conditions. To address this, our work proposed a collaborative optimization strategy by coupling heterojunction engineering with interfacial molecular modulation, to endow a high current gain of OPECT with low-AA -dependence. First, a CdZnS-SnInS heterojunction gate was constructed by in situ growth of CdZnS quantum dots (QDs) on SnInS nanoflowers, which enhanced the light trapping ability and photoelectric conversion efficiency of the photoactive gate.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide, with a reach extending beyond the liver to include other metabolic syndrome-related disorders. Cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus are recognised non-communicable disorders and often downstream complications of MASLD and share similar risk factors. However, MASLD has not been afforded parity alongside other cardiometabolic non-communicable disorders, including the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome.

Quantum dots, with their superior intrinsic fluorescence and photostability, are emerging as a promising option for cancer gene therapy, diagnosis, and imaging. However, low gene delivery efficiency, insufficient targeting, and responsiveness remain challenges. To address these issues, PEI-based carbon quantum dots (CPNCs) were constructed by crosslinking polyethylenimine quantum dots (PQDs) with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) via disulfide bonds.
